Are the Rangers Playing for the Shootout?

This is a question being thrown out there today, especially with Renney's use of the offensively limited forward duo of Blair Betts and Freddie Sjostrom during the 4-on-4 overtime...

Sam Weinman at The Rangers Reports notes 'Tom Renney and his players all claimed they were going after the win, and I actually did think they had the better of the chances in overtime.'

While Stan Fischler at MSG.com adds 'Since the Blueshirts do so well in the EXTRA, extra session, there are some who believe that gearing up for the shootout actually is part of Tom Renney's strategy.'

...if you have a goalie who excels to the level of Lundqvist in the shootout why wouldn't you play for it in overtime. Especially when you also have shooters who seem to be scoring at will.

Think about, Betts and Sjostrom played in the OT against Malkin and Crosby, the best offensive players in the game. You have to think that when those two guys are out there, more than likely they are going to control the puck, so why would it be beneficial to us to play Gomez and Zherdev against them? No, playing our top two defensive forwards against those two was smart, then when our top offensive guys are out there, they will have a better chance of not only having the puck, but creating offense, instead of trying to defend the best offensive players in the game.

Good point indeed. And why not play for the shootout if you're already going to OT. It is a valid strategy.
