Getting to Know Your New Defenseman

Here's Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register talking about the Rangers newest defenseman Steve Eminger, who was acquired from the Ducks for Aaron Voros...

"Eminger was scratched 18 times in all and finished with four goals and 12 assists in 63 games. The seven-year veteran had a plus-1 rating but that didn’t indicate the times he was often pushed around in his end and forced into making mistakes under pressure."

...he's going to fit right in with Redden and Rozsival.

...the Rangers gave up a popular locker room guy and added $125,00 in salary for this guy. SWEET!!!!

to me its ahl for ahl at least from rangers standpoint. voros would have been sent down and hartford lost sanguinetti heikkinen and likely potter. so especially if rangers carry 7 dmen which they did not last yr, they need dmen in hartford. i know some guys came on like niemi but still need more since defense with injuries was pretty weak at hartford level last yr

If they need defensive depth in Hartford I would have rather they kept Sangs, keep Potter while putting Voros in Hartford in case Boogaard, who never seems to stay healthy, gets injured.

Eminger just doesn't make sense to me.

they gave up voros who they were going to put in ahl. and once there if they tried to bring him back he might (key word) have been claimed at 1/2 price waivers. then we get cap hit and lose the player. if they ever tried to bring him back it would be late in season around trade deadline where pro rated cost would not be as much.

they were worried about sangs morale and by trading him now at least got 2nd rd pick

potter i think is disgusted here and i fully exepct him to sign elsewhere as PAP and locke did.

boogaard has sat about 30 games / yr so between prust and probably byers they could cover boogaard for games he misses.

i also think the rangers are a bit put off by the social stuff - taking away from players concentration. and voros was highly involved in that. and avery and henrik. but voros was easiest to move, henrik can't and won't be moved since he's backbone and avery has no interest from other teams.

i'm not a huge fan of how he often overhypes our kids - but i also think this is a pretty good state of the organizations defense at parent and ahl level

All great points Joe. I know the organization soured on Sangs but he's still a young, talented dman and Eminger has already played for five teams at age 26. Not exactly a great tradeoff.

Maybe Potter wouldn't be so disgusted if they gave him the opportunity they're giving Eminger. No way you can tell me Eminger is that much of a better player.

And as far as Voros goes, I just loved the guy's passion and hated to see him go. But yes it will be easy to cover for Boogaard with players like Byers.

kevin - i really think eminger is going to hartford. so again its one ahl bound guy (voros) for another. at least for rangers. voros has better chance of staying with anaheim. both their contracts end this yr and the rangers will be free of this contract in 1 yrs time.

and if the new guy makes the team it will be as 7th dman - and they would not do that to a prospect.

also see the prospect park article i linked here.

thanks kevin

Joe, trust me this trade really doesn't bother me that much as it should be insignificant to the Rangers success or failure this season.

I just don't like that for whatever reason whether it's the Rangers fault or not Sangs, Heikkinen, Erikkson and Potter has turned into Eminger.

Doesn't seem very beneficial to the Rangers.

at least they got something for sanguinetti while they could in the 2nd pick next yr.

i would have liked heikkinen or potter to get a chance. another reason among many that i never ever liked the redden signing.

i do agree the trade is pretty insignificanty except as a depth move for hartford or 7th man here - again they will not have a prospect sitting as 7th dman

Why is everybody missing this point:

By grabbing a veteran defensemen, it truly makes Redden expendable and gives the Rangers a backup plan if McDonagh or Gilroy can't handle the workload of a full-time NHL defenseman. This move screams movement of Redden to me.

i think the acquisition means nothing about redden. this guy is either 7th dman in ny or playing in hartford. no way redden would stay on rangers as 7th dman. also no way they put a prospect in as 7th dman as they want the prospects to actually play.

the rangers need at least 13 dmen between ny and hartford. the new guy is one of those. nothing more nothing less

It maintains the mediocrity of the team - good fit.
