Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants says this about the contract negotiations between the Rangers and Marc Staal...
"From what I gathered yesterday, the sides are still far apart. This is also not a negotiation that will be playing out in public so, one day, Marc Staal will be signed. As I mentioned in my last blog post, John Tortorella is not looking to have Staal in training camp if the restricted free agent defenseman is not signed but Tortorella is “optimistic” a deal will be reached."
...how far apart can the sides be. I hope Staal doesn't think he's a $5 million a year player. Because he's not. And the Rangers better not be offering the same amount as Girardi as he is worth more. $4.5 million for four years. Lock it up.

this deal should have been the number one priority when free agency started. its kinda annoying that this hasn't been done.
This is getting stupid
The problem isn't the money ... it's the years. The Rangers are going to want 2 years of Staal's free agency (age 27) period. Staal on the other hand isn't going to want to give up any
Stall has been a little disappointment in my eyes. According to all the reports when he was drafted he was supposed to be a very offensive defenseman. Instead we got this guy who is a big wuss. He is scared to hit and scared to rush the puck. He has the skill to take rush it but he seems so nervous. So he wants 5 mil for what?? Because he contain a puck carrier and stop him with a poke check. Yes he is right now one of our best defenseman but I just dont see anything special in him. He wants to much for being an average defenseman and I think thats the hold up. The Rangers are telling him the truth and that is you are not that special Marc. It sucks for him because the Rangers I think are done overpaying.
Ok I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here for a minute:
If we don't pick up Staal? Does that mean all deals are off? Redden's back in? Isn't there a middle-ground here?
Staal is a great guy and it's been fun to watch him grow into a very capable defenseman, but a bad contract is a bad contract and if he's just using the Rangers' deep pockets to score offer sheets from other teams, he's not thinking about the future of this team. For $5 mil a year, we can put that money to better use. Maybe not this season, but if we're looking towards the future then we're looking to have less, not more, high dollar-low equity players.
If we can't get Staal for a fair deal, we need to pick up a journeyman, lean on our rookies a bit more (like what we did with Staal) and stop burning money.
i could go either way on staal. i think hes kinda overrated. shut down Dman? not really. offensive Dman? not really. i think he has confidence problems and has questions as to his role on the team. sign him, but not for more than hes worth. i think giraradi got overpaid so i hope thats not used as a measuring stick. if theres an offer sheet and we get some kids from him, i say ok. hes overrated.
I like Staal, he has decent skills in the back end to make a #2 or #3 dman. I don't consider him a #1 mainly because he does everything well but nothing exceptionally well. At 5M he will be overpaid, at 3.5-4M he still needs to learn and excel in certain aspects of the game to garner 5M.
