Ranger Promises Led to Frolov Signing

Laurie Carr at Beyond the Blueshirts translates an interview Alexander Frolov had with Sport-Express which includes this quote on why he signed with the Rangers...

"Yes, I communicated with them before signing the contract. It was very important for me to understand in what capacity they would count on me. I heard that on the Rangers I’ll receive a lot of playing time, will regularly be on the ice during the power play. Most likely, I’ll play on a line with the leader of the team, Gaborik. In New York they want me to create a high-powered offensive unit with Gaborik."

...Frolov is definitely a player who feels like he was disrespected by the Kings last season and that the Rangers are an organization that will give him the opportunity to prove his worth to the league.

...it almost seems like he's using the Rangers for his own gain, but if it means a 30+ goal season I could care less.

Yeah, I feel like he got screwed in LA. After his 32 goal season they put him on the third line like two weeks after the season started. I'd be annoyed/pissed/depressed.

If he's a goal scorer and if counted upon bet he'll get the job done.

Everyone uses the team their on for their own gain always trying to do what they do best depending on their role so they could eventually obtain higher contracts for long periods of time. He's no different, but I'm glad he's on our team now. I hope they honor what they said to him otherwise I would feel real bad for the guy. He's a great player though so I'm sure he'll be on the ice and counted on often.

We'll have to give frolov the benefit of the doubt in the language department...perhaps he meant the scoring leader when referring to gaborik...

Where are all the clowns now saying to split up Gaborik and Frolov?? I played travel ice hockey and one or two years I was on terrible teams with my friend that I always played with throughout my years. We both dominated together and we would have been useless separated. You have to play the game to understand that its important that skilled players like Frolov and Gaborik play together.

Also another point is at the end of the game when down a goal you want both Frolov and Gaborik out there for the final minute. Its better if they play together to build chemistry. I am finding here some people don't know hockey.

I guess I'm a clown. theking, I hear what you're saying. But with how offensively challenged the Rangers are it might be a better idea to spread the offense around.

If the Rangers are a one line team their opponents will come up with a game plan to stop that line.

Unlike your rec league hockey the NHL has players to shutdown top offensive lines.

I think with the way Torts switches up lines we'll both get our wishes anyway.

travel ice hockey > rec league hockey.

Careful! IMHO a top line is a top line for a reason...

Guys we are all rangers fans here. If frolov starts with Gabby and they produce, we will all love it. If hes scoring with drury on line 3, so be it. We need scoring wherever we can get it.

Promised to play on a line with Gaborik? Haven't we seen a similar promise made before with MZA..

From May 26, 2010 on this blog..

Rangers Promised MZA Spot on Top Line With Gaborik

David Jigland at allehanda.se reports that Detroit Red Wings Director of European Scouting Hakan Andersson says the reason the Rangers were able to sign Mats Zuccarella Aason was a promise that he'd play on a line with Marian Gaborik...

"I was hoping he would sign for us but from what I understand he is ready for the New York Rangers. I do not know what it fell on but I know he has good contact with the (New York Rangers scout) Anders Hedberg past and the promise that maybe he would play in the first chain with Marian Gaborik."

Hey Sather can be lying his ass off just to sign these guys. They can get to practice with Gabby and try line 1 but we know it will all come down to who plays best with Gabby not who was promised. Sather is just that kind of GM. Hes stringing Staal along as we speak, not bc he dislikes Staal but bc he has the power to. So i dont think he would hesitate to tell his signees what they want to hear, because once they sign they are on the team.

Completely agree with you Dan W..

If Torts is still the coach, and last I checked he is, then He is going to decide what line Frolov plays on, how much ice time he gets and if he's on the PP. We all know that if a player doesn't produce or gives him any lip they end up on the 3rd line or simply sitting on the bench.

Actually the quote is "most likely",not definitely playing on a line with Gaborik.And unless he goes into a really protracted slump it seems completely obvious that someone of his skill set would "receive a lot of playing time" and "regularly be on the ice during the power play" for this offensively challenged team,nothing at all surprising here.

@Kevin

Haha I was going to give you an exemption cause I know you said split them up. I like your analysis most of the time and you give good opinions.

But thats the point of making one dominate line so they dont get shut down. One amazing line is better than two mediocre lines.

I played AAA and AA hockey from Mites to Midget. When I got older there were lines constantly going against us shadowing. I wish I loved it and was dedicated 100% I could have played at least D1. Im no expert but this game does help to have played it seriously.

@Brent

The promise to MZA was completely different and a lot more loose. I remember reading the article Keven posted and they made it sound like he has a solid chance of making the roster and maybe 1st line. Here they are granting Frolov automatic Power Play and a chance to play with Gaborik.

@Dan W

You are right, everyone will most likely have a shot with Gabby and whoever plays the best will stay. But Frolov will have the first chance and the longest chance to get it going.

In order for your skilled players to maximize their skill sets they must be paired with players that match not only their skills but their intensity as well. Frolov should be paired with Gaborik, however Gaborik has scored 40+goals last year with minimum help from a 1st line center. Frolov will benefit more from the matchup with Gaborik because Frolov by himself has not the skill set to produce with lesser players. It will be necessary for a chemistry to develop between the two for Frolov to be effective. MZA will 1st need to win a job, not easy considering he has yet to play the game N.A. style. Alot less skating room and more speed on average might make his transition alot more of a challenge than expected. I am hoping that he does fine but there are no guarantees that all goes well.
