Yesterday when I posted the New York Post column on Ryan McDonagh possibly bolting the Rangers I missed another item in there in which Larry Brooks asks this question..."Mike Green, caught in purgatory, is a blue-chip stock who never has traded lower. And OK, here's a two-part question: If McPhee were to come calling tomorrow offering Green and maybe Tomas Fleischmann or Eric Fehr to the Rangers for Marc Staal and, say, Ryan Callahan or Brandon Dubinsky, what would you do and what would you have GM Glen Sather do?"
...while Green's offense would be a major upgrade the Rangers do not need another offensive defenseman. They need a physical, clear-out the front of the net type guy.
...and to give up two of their top three young players for someone who is not needed is just insane.

UGH! Are you kidding me?! Callahan and Staal for Green and Fleishmann? I would kill myself. Did anyone watch the playoffs this year? Mike Green is a bottom 15% defensman in the league and possibly sports' most overrated athlete.
If the Rangers were to trade Staal and Cally or Dubinsky (which I sure hope they don't) they better be getting something A HELL OF A LOT BETTER than that. We'd be mortgaging our long term future to get WORSE in the short term...It would be Sather's worst move to date, and that is saying something.
Green was a no-show in the post season and while both he and Fleishmann were good during the regular season I'd still keep and develop what we have rather than make this trade.
Stall proved he is solid on D and had moments of offense.
I agree with Scott on this being a terrible move - that said, Sather will probably try to make it happen because he is after all Sather

not sure why everyone is hating on the trade. The Rangers actually do need a puck moving D, unless we think that Del Zotto will be the next Leetch. What Green provides in invaluable: 75 points on D?
But most importantly, a puck moving D-man changes the whole offense; it allows the team to move up ice much more quickly and creates scoring opportunities.
Why are we so enamored with Staal and Callahan? Because they play hard? So do Green and Fleishman. Callahan hit 50 points yet? Fleischmann has. Staal is a very good defender, but Green is a top 20 player in the league. He has looked shaky in the playoffs, but the man is a legit skater.
We should stop with this random attachments we have to these players. The Wings, Pens, and Ducks, who make frequent trips to the playoffs, have the best puck - moving D Men.
Staal is and should be untouchable.
How is Marc Staal classified as an "untouchable" please no one on this team is untouchable!

Second of all, calling Mike Green a top 20 player in the league has to be a joke, right?!?!? I think you've been watching too many Geico commercials and Barry Melrose segments and not enough ACTUAL hockey if you are making that claim. He has been the WORST player in the entire NHL for two straight post-seasons. When the going gets tough, Green crumbles - he crumbles so epically that he makes Zherdev look like Messier.
Anyway, I digress. Not only does Green blow - and would he be overpaid - but MDZ is 19 years old and has shown exceptional promise as the puck moving defenseman of the future. Do you really want to give up our ONLY good defensive defensman and the heart and soul of this team for an underachieving pretty boy and an average player who is clearly the product of his system.
Also, do you really think the Penguins are perennial contenders because of their puck moving D? Really? Not Crosby, Malkin and Staal as centers for starters...
And do you really think Green stacks up to Lidstrom?! Next you'll be telling me Al Montoya reminds you of a young Pat Roy.
Furthermore, lets see if Fleishman puts up those points when you take him off of the offensive juggernaut that is the Capitals. Throw him on Columbus...or NYR for that matter...and see what he produces. You know, throw Cally our there with ovie, backstrom, and semin and lets see how many points he has after the year.
Sorry for the rant, but I cant even begin to explain how poor I think this deal (which is not goign to happen anyway) would be for us and how much I disagree with you.

Look, I dont like this 'playoff disappearing talk.' Not everyone shines in the playoffs. Ever hear of Joe Thorton? Oh wait, we dont want Thorton, he crumbles in the playoffs. That issue = non issue.
I just cant understand how a 75 point D-man "blows." He must be doing something right. I know he plays for the Caps. But he has an exceptional shot, and great vision.
I'm not saying Pitt is good because of Gonchar. I'm saying all contenders have an elite puck moving D-man, which facillitates the transition from D to O.
Since when has Staal become the 'heart and soul?' Look, I think the kid is awesome, but he isnt vocal like Dubi, or crazy like Callahan, or god like Lundy.
This would be a terrible terrible trade... Staal is becoming a top young shutdown defenseman and Green is wildly overrated. If this trade happens, it would be another example of Sather's impatience and desire to look good in headlines destroying the franchise.....

Bottom line, I think this trade makes us worse. Much much worse.
