Rangers Top Players Need Relief

Arthur Staple at Newsday explains that the Rangers relied on their top players too much in last night's loss to Atlanta with Chris Drury and Brandon Dubinsky out of the line-up including 28 minutes for Vinny Prospal...

"With the Rangers pretty snugly up against the salary cap, they can't just call guys up at will. But we got the alternative last night, with three centers for four lines, and really only two in the furious finish of the third period, when Artem Anisimov and Brian Boyle made alternating appearances around Prospal's seemingly never-ending shifts."

However Staple doesn't blame John Tortorella...

"This is not on John Tortorella. He's gone with six defensemen this season, not out of necessity but out of a desire to have the best players here. So far, that move hasn't backfired.

But the team, from Glen Sather on down, had nearly a week to figure out something financially workable to get some fresh legs here."

...the Rangers had plenty of fresh legs last night. Unfortunately, all of them were watching from the bench.

...Tortorella has to get some of the blame here. He's the one making the line changes.
