Eklund: Rangers Could Up Ante In Lecavalier Sweepsteaks

Eklund at HockeyBuzz reports that his "source" says this about the Rangers trying to trade for Vinny Lecavalier...

"I find it hard to believe that the Rangers would not be able and willing to throw more into a deal for Vinny than anyone else. Staal, Dubinsky, Prucha, +"

...i almost have to apologize for posting this one.

I think you and many other Rangers fans are missing the bigger picture about the Rangers. They need to trade for Scott Stevens-like defensemen, and dare I say, trade Henrik Lundqvist for another All-Star goalie. That's right I said it! Trade Lundqvist! I realize he is well loved by Rangers fans, and he has good numbers. But, I think he peaked when Sweden won the gold in the last Olympics. Lunqvist lets in some very soft goals a lot of the time. I know he has a small, rather pourous defense in front of him, but he really is a large part of their problem. I think there are other factors as well: poor assistant coaching under Renney, and the obvious poor defense.

I was appalled when I saw the NY Daily News poll at the All-Star break to see that the fans gave Lundqvist an "A", the defense a "B" and the coaching a "B". What hockey team are they seeing?

Obviously not the same one I am seeing after the first 15 games of the season...

I think Henrik is making up for a lacking blueline --- every night he has been responsible for making miracle saves. The Rangers have let up more short-handed goals than any other team -- because our defense sucks. His recent loss of confidence is scary because he is the entire defense as we know it.

We don't need another goalie. We need support D men---- Redden and Khalinen are horrific...otherwise our D are Staal and Girardi, Rozzy shows up half the time, and two guys in their 2nd NHL year. Fantastic.

A lot of salary would obviously have to be headed the other way in a trade for Lecavalier, something which I am sure Tampa would not be looking for in a return package. At least one of Redden, Gomez or Drury would obviously have to be moved to make cap space, and then more salary would have to be moved on top of that because I believe Lecavalier makes more than any one of those three.

...oh and Staal isn't going anywhere.
