Sanguinetti, Heikkinen Sent Back to Hartford (Updated)

Update, 11:50 p.m.:
Larry Brooks at the New York Post offers an explanation as to why the Rangers sent Sanguinetti and Heikkinen down...

"The NHL’s eight-day holiday roster freeze goes into effect at midnight tonight and lasts through midnight, Dec. 27, with anyone on the roster at 12 PM ineligible for demotion to the AHL. Thus, absent an injury serious enough to merit time on IR, the Rangers, who were at the 23-player maximum, could not have made a personnel move for the duration of the freeze without these moves to clear roster space.

The team can recall Heikkinen and Sanguinetti tomorrow for Monday’s match in Carolina. Or, they might well recall one or the other plus Matt Gilroy, who is scheduled to play his fifth game for the Wolf Pack tonight since being sent to the AHL on Dec. 10. Players recalled during the freeze can move between the NHL and AHL without restriction."

...smart move by the Rangers. Like I said in the comments section, good thing I didn't overreact to the news without hearing an explanation.

Original Post:
Newyorkrangers.com reports that the Rangers have assigned Bobby Sanguinetti and Ilkka Heikkinen to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants has more here.

...unreal. Not even 30 hours after Torts says they are going with youth, the Rangers send two rookie defensemen down. Obviously this means Redden will be back in the line-up Monday night.

...how are we ever supposed to believe anything Torts says from now on? I'm guarenteeing a loss Monday night.

Like I said a few days ago...Torts has no clue how to deal with kids. Don't believe a word he is saying.

Like Gilroy. We all know Sanganetti will be Hartford before next week. All talk from Torterella.

Everybody Relax! they are bring Gilroy back. I think they are going to rotate a couple of the young d-men so they all get time with the big club and time to play big minutes and get confidence with the wolfpack. We are turning into a jerks that complain about every player, every move, every loss, every bad call and every bad goal.lets all relax.

A blogger on Ranger Rants says that this is a tactical manuever to get around the Christmas roster freeze that goes into effect tonight. I guess they can now decide which of the young D men to recall for Monday's game and whether or not to dress Redden.

Crap. I'm going to be at Monday's game and I was hoping that Redden would still be in street clothes. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

RELAX it's just so they can send those two down if necessary during the roster freeze.. They're both playing Monday... GEEZ people are so quick to bash and panic.

Yes, will all of you please calm down. Even if Sangs and Heikks aren't coming back, Gilroy will be and I'm sure Redden will have gotten the message. Like you guys said, the main purpose of the move is to allow the kids to spend the holidays with their friends and families, rather than in a hotel room.

Thanks for the background on the moves. It's a good thing I didn't overreact.
