Gilroy Sent to Hartford (Updated)
Updated, 1:27 p.m.:
Here's the official release from the Rangers.
Update, 1:20 p.m.:
The AHL Transaction Report also acknowledges that the Rangers have also sent down Chad Johnson, while recalling Matt Zaba.
...smart move as there was no reason for the Rangers to let their #1 goaltending prospect rot on the bench in the NHL.
...still bewildered by the Gilroy move. Not sure if this was done to free up some cap space to make a move or to send a message. No idea what message that would be when other defensemen (ie Rozsival and Girardi) were playing as bad if not worse than Gilroy.
Original Post:
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants reports that the Rangers have sent Matt Gilroy down to Hartford, while retaining Ilkka Heikkinen.
Gilroy, scoreless in his last four, has four goals and two assists in 30 games. Defensively, Gilroy was beaten one-on-one on Dustin Byfuglien’s winner in last night’s 2-1 overtime loss at Chicago.
Gross adds that financially this gives the Rangers, tight against the salary cap, a little wiggle room.
...wow, I am completely taken off guard by this move. Sure Gilroy's play has suffered recently and he was absolutely toasted last night by Byfuglien, but I never would have expected this. As soon as quotes are available, I'll get them to you.

There has to be some kind of a trade coming and they are trying to clear up cap space. Thats the only 'logical' explanation
I still think they should have played Johnson a game or two before sending him down. At least see how the kid holds up.
I wonder how much of the Gilroy decision is due to Tortorella's reaction to him getting burned in OT last night.
Being a tough coach is one thing but potentially damaging the confidence of a talented young player and shitting on the entire team is grounds for dismissal.
I'm over this douche bag behind the bench.
Of course you typical fans are starting to turn on Tortorella, but what prompts Gilroy being sent down? There has to be something bigger going on, sending him clears almost 2 mil off the books, a trade must be comming.
This is redicoulous...Torts needs to go....he was a great boost for a short time but he lacks the leadership to take this team where they need to go..I know the team is scoring much but maybe if he left the same people together on the same line for more than 1 game maybe they would click....an the Gilroy thing...i'm at a loss of words.
I'd love to hear some quotes on this Gilroy move.
I want to hear from torts.....or the GM...because watching a guy like rosvival play makes me sick....put him on waivers who cares if someone takes him they will be doing us a favor.
Hey Evan.
Why not send down Rozival, who has been the worst defenseman on the ice every night and would save more cap room...
Why , because Tortorella and Sather are awful!!!!
