Redden to Be Placed on Waivers Today!!!! (Updated)
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun tweets this quote from Sather back in 2008 when the Rangers signed Redden...
“He’s been an all-star twice in the league. He’s the best first passer in the game today."
...ooops.
Update, 10:52 a.m.:
Gross posts this quote from Sather over at Ranger Rants about Redden seeming to play “carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.”
...like I say in the comments section if he had some idea he might feel that type of pressure why take the money?
Update, 10:34 a.m.:
Andrew Gross tweets that the move was made to give younger guys more of a chance.
Gross also tweets that Redden told Sather he'll take a few days to consider options. Sather said he would be allowed to play at Hartford.
Finally Gross has this quote from Sather: "It's always difficult changing somebody's life but you have to do what's right for the team."
Update, 10:32 a.m.:
Jesse Spector tweets that Sather said Redden didn't seem surprised -- "He'd seen the writing on the wall."

Voros Still Using Face As Punching Bag

Math Working Against Redden
Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that math would seem to mitigate against Wade Redden opening the season with the Rangers in Buffalo on Oct. 9 even if he outplays the other contenders for the jobs on the third pair...NHL to Do Hard Knocks Style Show
ESPN.com reports that the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins will star in an HBO series centered around their showdown in the Winter Classic....as a reality TV junkie I am super excited for this, but the fact that it's more Crosby tempers some of my enthusiasm.

Thomas Starts Junior Season With A Bang; Werek Injury a Concern
Jess Rubenstein at The Prospect Park reports that Rangers 2010 2nd round pick Christian Thomas is already on his way towards trumping last year's 41-goal effort by starting this season with a two-goal effort as his Oshawa Generals routed the Peteborough Petes 9-2 last night.A Trade Likely
...wonder which players other teams might be interested in? Kennedy? Christensen? Gilroy?
...and if the issue the Rangers have is a glut of third line players, what would they want in return? I guess draft picks.
Zipay also points out that Christensen needs to raise his game.
...EC was a player I had penciled in centering Gaborik this year, but he has been a no-show at camp so far and with Stepan impressing may find himself in the press box or being traded.

Stepan Wants to Work on Faceoffs
"Faceoff circle. I have to get better at that," said Stepan, who was 5-of-10 on draws Thursday. "I think it's just the first-game jitters. It's something I have to work on."
...someone bring in the retired Rod Brind'Amour to teach this kid a thing or two.
...with his preseason performance and Drury's injury I just can't see a scenario where he isn't in the opening night lineup.
...now that doesn't mean he'll stick, especially of he struggles. But you have to love the chemistry between him Gabby and AFro.

Why the Rangers Are In or Out of the Playoffs
NEW YORK RANGERS
IN Martin Biron holds the fort for 15 games, allowing a fresh Henrik Lundqvist to shine brighter than ever in the remaining 67. The Rangers got a healthy, productive campaign from Marian Gaborik during his first season on Broadway; will they be lucky enough to get an encore plus a bounce-back year from Alexander Frolov in his Ranger debut?
OUT Gaborik once again fails to stay in the lineup consistently and the Blueshirts are completely dominated up the middle thanks to a shocking dearth of impact centers.

Stepan, McDonagh & Boyle Make Impact
Jim Cerny at newyorkrangers.com reports Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and Brian Boyle, all on the roster bubble, had impact games last night...Marian Gaborik had this to say about Stepan, who recorded an assist last night while playing with Gabby and Afro....
“He played very good,” Gaborik said of Stepan. “He was not afraid to make a play, get a hit, or give a hit. I think he was good defensively. For the first game, he played very good.”
...love hearing he wasn't afraid to make a play. That's the problem with some rookies, they're too afraid of making a mistake and don't play their game. Looks like we've got ourselves a keeper.
Cerny writes that he was impressed with McDonagh's ability to recover from a mistake...
"A prime example of this occurred with 7:30 remaining in the third period when McDonagh completely missed a hip check along the boards, springing the New Jersey puck carrier Bradley Mills on right wing. Instead of panicking, McDonagh swiftly reacted, using his long reach to poke the puck off Mills’ stick even though he, himself, was falling to the ice."
...similar to what I just wrote about Stepan it's great to hear about a rookie who doesn't panic in the face of adversity.
And finally John Tortorella had this to say about Boyle, who scored a goal and had numerous big hits last night...
“I think Brian Boyle wants to improve,” Tortorella said. “And I think that he has looked at the people that are here and knows where he’s at. He’s had a very good camp, so far.”
...i thought for sure Boyle was getting a one-way ticket to Hartford this year, but with the way he's playing in camp and his low salary he may find his way onto the opening night roster.

Daughter's Update
My daughter is doing much better and hopefully will be home tomorrow. She still has a long road ahead, but it will be nice to have her home.
I hope to have time to do pre and post game posts tomorrow for the first preseason game. If for no other reason than to get my mind off what my daughter's been through.
Again, my thanks to everyone.
Update, 11:17 p.m.:
Decided to change the banner. This one is from Justin.
I Ask for Your Patience
Unfortunately, my youngest daughter had an accident on Monday night and I've been living at the hospital ever since.
She's ok, but I'll probably be there the next few days as well, so suffice it to say this blog and the Rangers are a little low on my priority list right now.
I appreciate all the well wishes I've received so far and I promise that I'll be back in the next few days.
I will keep you all updated on my daughter's well being.
Thanks again.

Avery Continues to Shine; Reaction to Drury Injury & Stepan Talks Chemistry
...besides the outstanding play of Stepan the other most pleasant sign at camp so far is a much improved Avery. He looks like he means business this year.
Gross also has this quote from Marian Gaborik on the Chris Drury injury...
“It’s just frustrating to him that it happened,” Gaborik said. “He’s our captain and obviously a big part of our team. We just have to manage.”
...i know Drury hasn't lived up to his contract, but when your captain goes down that is definitely a blow to the team.
Finally, Jesse Spector at the Blueshirt Blog spoke with Derek Stepan on playing on a line with Gabby and Afro...
"I had a blast with those two guys,” Stepan said. “I don’t know how chemistry works - you step on the ice and just seem to find guys. For us three, we just clicked, and I don’t know if it’s something about first day, first scrimmage, everyone’s excited to play, or if it’s chemistry. I don’t know what it was, but I’m excited to see if we get another chance at it and see if it was truly chemistry. Because I don’t really know how to explain chemistry - when you can find it, it’s something special. Plus, I didn’t take chemistry in school.”
...having chemistry with the two top scoring threats on the team is always good for your chances of making the team.

Gilroy Gets Serious
Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report was able to speak with Matt Gilroy about what he learned last year and what's he's done to improve this season...“I just worked on my confidence a little more, and definitely my work down low and closing people out, using my skating in the defensive zone. Offensively I can jump into plays, but I can also use it to my advantage (on defense). I put 10 pounds on and it didn’t effect my skating at all. It just made me stronger. I feel stronger. I feel quicker. So it all worked. It is practice games, and we won’t see until real games start, but I feel comfortable.”
Gilroy says he's also going to take a much more serious approach this season.
...Gilroy has been told by the Rangers that he has a clean slate this season (are they saying that to everyone?), but with McDonagh poised to make the team and numerous veteran invitees in camp Gilroy might find it hard to crack the opening night roster. Especially with his $1.75 million cap hit.

Wrestling With the Rangers
Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy continues his wrestling themed season previews by looking at the Rangers.Wyshynski names Derek Stepan a potential break out player and Michael Del Zotto a flop candidate.
Here is Wyshynski's prediction...
There are too many questions marks, and they're in too tough a division, to project the Rangers as a playoff team. But their firepower up front and Lundqvist between the pipes puts them squarely on the playoff bubble again, and perhaps over the hump if the young defensemen continue to improve.
...as always Puck Daddy does an outstanding job of combining hockey and humor. By far the best hockey blog (besides mine of course) out there.

Drury Out Four Weeks With Broken Finger (Updated)
Gross now tweets that prospect Ethan Werek skated off the ice during the scrimmage grimacing with an apparent left leg injury.
...Torts let's stop this thing before you don't have anyone to play Thursday night.
Update, 1:09 p.m.:
@thenyrangers tweets this quote from Vinny Prospal on Drury's injury...
"Tough break for him bc he was skating well & he's in great shape"
Update, 12:48 p.m.:
Steve Zipay tweets that Drury could miss three regular season games.

...geez tough morning at camp first Yogan now this. Hey Torts get Gaborik and Lundqvist off the ice immediately.
...tough break (no pun intended) for Drury. I'm sure he was looking forward to a bounce back year offensively and this injury is going to set him back a bit.
...got to love that the guy is selling out and blocking shots in a scrimmage.

4th Round Pick Yogan Needs Shoulder Surgery
Yogan's injury did not occur during camp; team decided that shoulder needed to be tightened from previous injury.
Yogan on the surgery...
"I'm not too worried about it, I'm still really young, which is main reason they want me to do this now"
...like Yogan said, he's not going to make an impact with the Rangers for a few years so might as well get it done now.
