The 24-year-old native of North Bellmore, N.Y. was named the Hobey Baker Award winner as the best U.S. college hockey player this year.
Gilroy, who had 8g, 29a in 45 games this year, isn't eligible to join the Rangers on their current playoff run, but will attend the club's late summer training camp with an eye on making their 2009-10 NHL roster.
...nothing wrong with signing a Hobey Baker Award winner other than there being less money to sign Dubinsky, Zherdev, Antropov, Callahan, Sjostrom, Morris and Mara.

this kid will likely not be a ranger next season unless he is spectacular in training camp, then he will go to hartford and will not count against the cap.
plus, I wouldn't worry to much about the cap, a wade redden buyout will create room and I don't believe the salary cap will shrink next year because the resurgence of Columbus, Florida and St Louis has likely balanced out money lost on franchises such as phoenix and the islanders
wade redden buyout? cant we just send him to the minors? that way we can have the full price off our cap, not just half...let him rot in hartford for all i care...gilroy seems like he could be able to step in and play well for us next year,
