Rangers Talk Cuts

Jim Cerny at newyorkrangers.com has numerous quotes from John Tortorella and players on yesterday's cuts...

Torts on sending McDonagh & Valentenko to Hartford...

“You have to make sure that you don’t force feed as far as their development,” said Tortorella. “The quicker they get down there to play and go through the American Hockey League, that will be the right process to get them up here quicker to play in the National Hockey League. When that will be, I don’t know. But they both had good camps.”

Stepan on making the Rangers...

“It’s a special feeling and I am excited,” said Stepan, 20. “But now the work really begins. You have to work twice as hard to stay up here.”

Sauer on working harder now that he's earned a spot...

“It’s a competitive business,” said Sauer, 23. “You have to show up every day, can’t take days off. But every day is an opportunity to show you belong.”

Rangers Sign Fedotenko for 1-year $1 million

Newyorkrangers.com announced today that the Rangers have agreed to terms with free agent forward Ruslan Fedotenko.

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants reports that it's a one-year, $1 million deal.

...i'm definitely on board with this deal, one-year and on the cheap. How could anyone complain? Will be real easy to move him if necessary as well.

Prospal to Have Season Ending Surgery?

In Larry Brooks article in the New York Post today he reports this on Vinny Prospal's knee...

"Meanwhile, a well-placed source has told The Post that there's little reason for optimism that the condition of Vinny Prospal's right knee will improve following his enforced two-week rest period. Indeed, we're told it would be no surprise at all should the 35-year-old require surgery that would likely end his season, if not his career."

...well that ends up being a bad signing if true. Although, I'd rather he'd be done for the season than being in and out of the lineup all season long. While, most likely being ineffective.

...h/t to reader Kevin H.

Bold Prediction: Rangers Make Playoffs

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy gives his 20 bold predictions for this season and jinxed the Rangers with #3...

3. The Rangers will make the playoffs this year.

...thanks Greg, because of you we can expect the Rangers to finish behind the Islanders this season. J/J.

...this is actually the first positive prediction I've seen about the Rangers this off-season. And Wyshynski is a Devils fan.

Update, 9:51 a.m.:

Eminger-Rozsival
Sauer-Gilroy

...assuming Eminger is out when Staal comes back. Not sure if Torts will change pairs also.

...ladies and gentlemen your 2010-11 New York Rangers opening night lineup.

@thenyrangers tweets that Marc Staal is the only player not practicing this morning.

...this obviously has to do with the hip injury he sustained Friday night. Let's hope it's nothing serious.

Rangers Interested in O'Brien?

Bob McKenzie tweets...

NYR in market for experienced d-man. Could Torts-Shane O'Brien be reunited? SOB may be claimed by another team. Will find out noon Monday.less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

O'Brien had 2g, 6a in 65 games with Vancouver last year.

...assuming if the Rangers really do have interest in O'Brien it's because they have no confidence in Eminger as their 7th defenseman.

Sauer, Eminger In; McDonagh, Valentenko Out

Newyorkrangers.com reports that defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko have been assigned to Hartford (AHL).

In addition, forwards Dale Weise and Mats Zuccarello, who were recalled from Hartford yesterday, have been reassigned to the Wolf Pack.

That means, in all likelyhood, that Mike Sauer is #6 and Steve Eminger is #7.

...congrats to Sauer, as he definitely outplayed both Valentenko and McDonagh. Wonder if the fact that Sauer had no options left and had clear waivers before reporting to Hartford had anything to do with the decision.

...while I'm not an Eminger fan, it makes sense to keep him as #7 so that both Valentenko and McDonagh can get valuable minutes in Hartford.

As expected, no forward cuts with injuries to Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal.

...sorry for getting this to you guys late. It's Sunday, and I watch football on Sundays.

Islanders Release Ortmeyer

Chris Botta at NYI Point Blank reports that the Islanders have released F Jed Ortmeyer. Ortmeyer was in camp on a tryout basis.

...bitter sweet here, glad to see that he won't be in an Islanders uniform, but I'd like to see him back in the NHL. Let's wish him luck catching on with a team.

Three Teams Interested in Fedotenko

Brcue Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that Ruslan Fedotenko has had such a strong camp that at least three other teams have contacted him to say they’re interested if the Rangers don't sign him to a contract.

...the guy came to camp on a tryout and has played his way onto an NHL team, whether it's the Rangers or someone else. Maybe the Rangers can sign him to a contract and when Prospal and Drury come back see if they could trade him for a pick or a prospect.

Torts Has a Pretty Good Idea What He Wants to Do

Jim Cerny at newyorkrangers.com has these quotes from John Tortorella on tomorrow's cuts...

“I have some pretty good ideas about what we are going to do, but these are going to be some very difficult decisions,” said Tortorella.

“There are a lot of things for us to consider, not just how a player has played (in preseason) but where he fits in the balance of our club.”

...as I've said, I don't remember a camp this competitive and a final cut this up in the air. The Drury, Prospal and Rozsival injuries make the situation that much more cloudy.

...should be interesting.

Senators 8, Rangers 5

The New York Rangers (4-2-0) lost to the Ottawa Senators (3-5-0) by the score of 8-5, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports and newyorkrangers.com.

...love the scoring, but man you've got to be a little worried about the defense. It's been spotty at times this preseason. Which has a lot to do with the youth on the back end. You know who the Rangers could use? A veteran defenseman, like a Wade Redden. I kid, I kid.

...torts can't be happy with the -4 from Stepan tonight, but that goal makes it easy to forget. +/- is an over-rated stat anyway. Redden was a + player last year and I don't think anyone would say he had a good year. Have I mentioned Redden in my first two thoughts? Wow!!!

...i was kidding last night when I said White needed a hat trick to get himself back on the radar and the guy almost comes through.

...unfortunately, Biron was a better playmaker tonight than a goal stopper.

...Anisimov continues to quietly impress this preseason. Really excited for a breakout year for him.

...i'm surprised that Dubinsky has been held out of every preseason game so far. He hasn't? Are you sure?

...gutless spear by Boogaard. If you want to send a message not to hit your top players drop the gloves like a man. Isn't that why Sather brought this guy in?

...is it me or has Eminger been on the ice for every goal against these last two games? I don't even want this guy as the seventh defenseman.

...i still think that Sauer and Valentenko have outplayed McDonagh. Although Valentenko's two penalties tonight are concerning.

...Fedotenko ends the preseason with 1g, 6a. Should be enough to get him on the roster. Especially with injuries. Don't count Kennedy out either as he had another strong effort tonight.

...nice to see MZA chip in with a goal. Who knows maybe he can contribute this year.

...cuts loom tomorrow. With the Prospal, Drury and Rozsival injuries only expect two. My picks are Eminger and White.

Rangers Scouting Oilers

In further proof that the Rangers may be interested in Sheldon Souray, Jim Matheson at the Edmonton Journal reports that Blueshirts scout Doug Risebrough has seen the Oilers play four straight games.

...assuming Risebrough is at the games speaking with Oilers management as Souray isn't playing in any of the exhibition games.

...like I said yesterday, if the Rangers could get him off of re-entry waivers ($2.7 million per) I wouldn't be totally against it, however, it would mean youngsters such as McDonagh, Sauer and Valentenko will most likely be spending the year in Hartford.

...is Souray's power play prowess worth possibly stunting the growth of those three? Let me hear what you think in the comments section.

Rangers Talk Win vs. Senators

The Rangers released these quotes after the game...

John Tortorella on Brian Boyle…“Brian Boyle was much better with face-offs tonight. He’s had a pretty good Camp here and no one tends to talk about it but he’s been a hell of a guy through Camp. A guy who knew where he stood in terms of numbers coming in – he’s handled himself pretty well.”

Derek Stepan on how he has played during the pre-season…“I am happy with what I have done. I have put my best foot forward. Whatever happens, happens. I know I gave it everything I had. We will see from there.”

Brian Boyle on the team…“We have a great team with a lot more depth this year. That is just from guys trying to get better. We have some new faces obviously but we have guys that just want to get better. We all want to move to the top and get better.”

Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report has more quotes here and here.

Prospal Shut Down

Updated: 11:20 p.m.:
Carp has these quotes from Torts on Prospal...

“We’re going to keep (Prospal) off the ice for a couple of weeks, rest him, try to get him back on the ice after that and see how it reacts."

On whether there’s structual damage that might need surgery?

“No, not right now. It’s a situation where we want to approach it conservatively, and it’s not so much a lot of pain, it’s just some swelling that goes on with it. … We didn’t even go there (surgery). So he’s frustrated. He wants to play. But this will be the best thing. It’s been a lot of skating, so he’s going to continue to work out, keep his strength up, but as far as skating we’re going to leave it alone and see how that reacts.”

Original Post:
Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report notes that Vinny Prospal will be shut down for a couple of weeks to rest his right knee, which continues to swell when he skates.

Carp adds that after exams today, team doctors met with Prospal and John Tortorella following tonight’s game, and the decision was to keep him off skates for a couple of weeks, then see how the knee reacts when he skates.

...this was the reason I was against the Rangers re-signing Prospal. Older player coming off knee surgery. Never a good mix.

Jesse Spector at the Blueshirts Blog reports that Torts still believes Chris Drury will end up on the IR.

...if Drury and Prospal end up starting the preseason on the IR the Rangers won't have to cut any forwards. Which would just delay the inevitable for White and possibly Kennedy.

Rangers 5, Senators 4 (SO)

The New York Rangers (4-1-0) defeated the Ottawa Senators (2-5-0) by the score of 5-4 in a shootout, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports and newyorkrangers.com.

...absolutely have to love how the bubble guys continue to step up in big spots. Boyle and Fedotenko were two guys I thought had no chance of being on the opening night roster. Now I don't see how they can't. Boyle has been the biggest surprise this preseason.

...book Stepan's ticket to Buffalo. His short-handed goal was unreal.

...i'd have to say right now Sauer and Valentenko have outplayed Eminger and McDonagh for the 6th and 7th spots. Thought Eminger had a solid start to the game but fell apart as the game went on. Although with Rozsival still nursing a knee injury, three of those four might stick with the team

...until he scored I thought Staal was having a terrible game. He's seems a step slow this preseason. Could missing informals set a player back this much? Having said that let's hope he's not injured. He's still the Rangers best defenseman.

...Kennedy and White are lucky Drury and Prospal are hurt because they both might have been cut after tonight's game. They both need a hat trick tomorrow if they want any chance to hang around after the two injured vets come back.

...Boogaard looked like he didn't know what to do after he scored it had been so long. Now let's get one in the regular season big guy.

...i'm not used to this team scoring so many goals. It's pretty nice.

...got to mention the first period snow shower by Avery. God I love when he plays his game.

...same two teams go at it tomorrow night in Ottawa.

Place Your Bets

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy gives us odds for the 2010-11 season from Stanley Cup to the individual awards.

The Rangers are 40/1 to win the cup, 33/1 to win the conference and 15/1 to win the division.

Marian Gaborik is 30/1 to win the Hart Trophy (League MVP), 35/1 for Art Ross Trophy (league point winner) and 9/1 for Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy (top goal scorer), while Henrik Lundqvist is 8/1 to win Vezina Tropy (top goaltender).

...would have liked to have seen Stepan get some odds for the Calder Trophy (top rookie).

Kreider Ranked 23rd Best Prospect in NHL

Hockey's Future continues their list of the top 50 NHL prospects with 11-25 and Chris Kreider lands at #23...

23. Chris Kreider – LW – New York Rangers
Height: 6-2, Weight: 201
A prototypical power forward, with excellent speed and good hands, Kreider was a 2009 first round selection of the New York Rangers. At the time of the draft, Krieder was playing prep school hockey, and in one season his game improved by leaps and bounds. Kreider went from playing prep school hockey to the 2010 World Junior Championships, the 2010 NCAA Championships, and the 2010 Men's World Championships. He has returned to Boston College for his sophomore 2010-11 season, but it is likely that Kreider will become a professional next fall, and compete for an NHL roster spot at that time.

...Kreider will be the Stepan of next year's training camp. As all as fans will be pushing for him big time to make the team. Time will only tell if he'll be ready.

Morning Practice Cancelled; Possible Lines for Tonight

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that a flood watch cancelled the Rangers morning practice.

Zipay also takes shot at tonight's lines...

Gaborik-Prospal-Frolov
Avery- Stepan-Fedotenko
Dubinsky- Anisimov-Callahan
Boogaard- Boyle- Prust

Zipay is unsure about defensive pairings and says Henrik Lundqvist will be in goal tonight.

...big game for Boyle and Fedotenko.

Can You Give Sather Credit for Making Up for Mistakes?

John Grigg at The Hockey News says it's not all bad when it comes to Glen Sather...

"But for all his perceived faults, you have to give Sather credit for at least one thing: he’s sly as a fox when it comes to divesting himself of bad contracts. NHL.fanhouse.com posted a top-five worst Sather signings Wednesday and there are some bad ones. Whether they actually are the worst ones or not (Chris Drury is hardly a world-beater at $7.05 million per year) is up for debate. But take a look at all of those guys; see anything in common? None are still Rangers; all were traded or otherwise taken off the books."

So my question to you Ranger fans, can you give Sather credit for being able to make up for his mistakes (most specifically the Gomez deal)? Let me hear you in comments section.

...my opinion is you could give him some credit if there were only a few bad signings, but the shear volume of mistakes makes it hard for me to give him too much credit. And the biggest thing for me is two, count em two, playoff series wins in nine years. Yikes.

Rangers Keeping an Eye on Souray

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Glen Sather would have keen interest in the recently waived Sheldon Souray should the Oilers place him on re-entry waivers.

Under that scenario, the Blueshirts only would be hit with a $2.7 million cap charge by getting Souray via re-entry, splitting both his annual cap hit and his $4.5 million salary with the Oilers.

There are, however, two obstacles confronting Sather. First, the Oilers have no immediate plan to place Souray on re-entry, assuming he clears. Second, the Blueshirts would have the 10th claim on re-entry, making it unlikely that he would get through to that pick.

...for $2.7 million, I'd be in. For his regular salary of $5.4 million for the next two years, not so much.
