Brian Elliot - 1-0-0, 1.01 gaa, .966 sv%, 0 so.
Opponent Notes:
- Ottawa is coming off a 1-6-1 extended road trip.
- Daniel Alfredsson has points in four straight games against the Rangers, including a goal in both meetings this season.
- Senators leading scorer Dany Heatley had an assist on Thursday - his seventh in nine games - but has no goals since tallying two in Ottawa’s first game of the trip, a 6-4 loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 23. Heatley has 14 goals and 18 assists in 25 career games against the Rangers.
- Due to Ottawa's goaltending woes the Senators called up Brian Elliot yesterday. Elliott was 18-8-1 with a 2.31 GAA with AHL Binghamton.

Rozsival Better; Who Sits for Sanguinetti?
Michael Obenauer at The Blueshirts Blog says that Michal Rozsival is feeling much better and likely will play tonight.Obenauer speculates that either Paul Mara (wrist) or Dmitri Kalinin (sucks) could sit in favor of Bobby Sanguini.
...knowing the Rangers, my money's on Saguinetti sitting tonight. They've got the fan based pumped up to see the kid and in typical Blueshirt fashion they'll probably have him in the press box.
Shanahan A Devil
TSN is reporting that Brendan Shanahan is joining the Devils, but has yet to agree to terms on a contract and it isn't clear at this point when that will happen or when he will be ready to play a game with them. Here's a statement from the Devils...
"Brendan Shanahan has agreed in principle to join the New Jersey Devils," general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. "He will begin skating on his own.
"Brendan will join the team at a date to be determined."
...this is worst case scenario for the Rangers. We can't score and now the Devils just picked up one of the most prolific scorers in NHL history. Sweet.
...i bet Shanahan will be chomping at the bit to get back on the ice and help the Devils pass the Rangers in the standings.
...having said all that I'm still glad we didn't sign him.
Rangers Recall Sanguinetti
Newyorkrangers.com is reporting that defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).Sanguinetti, who was just named to the AHL All-Star team, has 3 goals, 20 assists and is a -13 on the season for the Wolfpack.
For more on the recall visit Ranger Rants, where Andrew Gross explains that Sanguinetti was called-up due to injuries to Rozsival and Mara and why he may have gotten the call over Corey Potter.
...man I hope Sanguinetti gets a chance tonight. This team needs something to get them jump started. Let's hope this is it.
...unfortunately, Sanguinetti's -13 fits right in with the rest of the Rangers defensemen minus Marc Staal.

Eklund: Rangers Interested in Doan
Eklund at HockeyBuzz (notice no link) says that the Rangers and Sabres are talking to the Coyotes about Shane Doan...
Eklund's "source" said...
"At this point the Rangers have the best offer, but the Sabres are serious and going to up the ante maybe as early as this afternoon."
Doan currently has 18 goals, 22 assists and is a +8 on the season. Doan also has three years left on his contract at $4.55 million per. The Coyotes are $9.7 million under the cap.
...with continued outcry against me posting links to Eklund (last month I polled my readers and a large majority wanted me to keep posting the infamous anonymous blogger's rumors), I've decided to meet everyone half way. I will be posting the rumor, but not a link to Eklund's site in an effort to keep my readers from visiting his site and possibly paying him for more false rumors.
...now that the NHL is financing the Coyotes, I'm not sure how easy it'll be to make a trade with them. However they do have cap space if they wanted to trade Doan for say a grossly over-paid, broken down, so-called power play specialist defenseman with five years left on his contract and only 5 power play points on the year.

Ex-Rangers All the Rage At KHL All-Star Game
Arthur Staple at Blue Notes informs us that KHL All-Star game will have a Broadway Blueshirts feel to it...
Team Yashin includes D Darius Kasparaitis.
Team Jagr includes No. 68, D Karel Rachunek, F Marcel Hossa and even former first-round pick Pavel Brendl, Neil Smith's bad choice.
...first they're firing coaches mid-game now these Ranger re-treads are on the All-Star teams. Was the KHL really supposed to give the NHL a run for it's money?

Jagr Willing to Play With Pens for League Minimum
While Jaromir Jagr notes that he has no immediate plans on returning to the NHL, he did tell Ken Campbell at The Hockey News this...“I was thinking about it and if Mario would call me and say, ‘I’d like you to play for our team,’ I would think about it a lot,” Jagr said in a telephone interview from Moscow where the Kontinental League will hold its inaugural All-Star Game outdoors at Red Square Saturday. “I would play for the minimum salary. I would play for $350,000 just for him because I owe him my hockey life."
...after seeing Jagr leave the NHL for the riches of the KHL, why do I find this hard to believe.
With the earlier report today that Jagr's hand-picked Avangard Omsk coach Wayne Fleming was fired, I wondered if it could get any worse for the former Ranger in Russia. But I guess it's not all bad as Lynn Zinser at the New York Times was able to get a phone interview with Jagr today in which he said he had no regrets about leaving the NHL as well as this...
“You could write a book about it,” Jagr said of his season during a telephone interview from Moscow. “But I’m fine. I’m doing good. I’m happy.”
...of course he's happy. He has 10 million reasons this year and next year to be happy.
...despite using a link to my blog as an example of someone who promotes Eklund, I'm still going to give Greg Wyshinski at Puck Daddy a hat tip for these two links.
Sabres 2, Rangers 1, SO

The New York Rangers (24-15-4) lost to the Buffalo Sabres (21-15-5) by the score of 2-1 in a shootout, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...never has it been more apparent that this team needs a finisher than tonight. While Miller was on, the Rangers have to bury some of those chances and I don't think they have the personnel to do that on a consistant basis.
...another outstanding effort by Valiquette. With the way he's played this year the back-up goaltender deserves a better record than 4-3-2.
...the fourth line was by far the best line on the ice for the Rangers tonight. Orr was the sole reason for the Rangers lone goal tonight.
...didn't see how Rozsival was doing after the game, but it's safe to say that he's going to feel that one in the morning.
...in my continuing effort to keep you guys updated on the failures of the Rangers power play we had another o'fer tonight (0 for 2). We are now 27th in the league on the power play with a paltry 14.6% success rate. And somehow Perry Pearn will make the trip with the team to Ottawa tonight.
...right back at it tomorrow night against the Sens.

- The Sabres have won three in a row.
- Derek Roy, who leads Buffalo with 38 points this season, has a three game point scoring streak.
- Thomas Vanek's 27 goals are tied with Philadelphia’s Jeff Carter and Washington's Alex Ovechkin for the league lead. Vanek has four goals and an assist in his last four games versus the Rangers.

Cherepanov Death Hurts Entire Ranger Organization
Hockey's Future currently ranks the Rangers at #24 in their NHL Organizational Rankings. The death of Alexei Cherepanov is named as a big reason for the low ranking...
"The tragic loss of Alexei Cherepanov creates an absence of elite talent, leaving behind a glut of power and checking forwards, and few natural goal scorers."
...with the exception of Nikolai Zherdev every Ranger forward is from the same mold. Drury, Callahan, Dubinsky, Sjostrom, Korpikoski etc. You tell me the difference.
...it might be time to bring up a talent like Artem Anisimov, who may not be a defensive wizard, but he can score as evidenced by his 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points in 38 games for Hartford.

Jagr's KHL Coach Fired
Avanguard Omsk coach Wayne Fleming was fired by the club during the second intermission of their game against Vityaz Podolsk yesterday reports TSN.
Avangard was losing 1-0 at the time of Fleming's firing and rallied to win the game 2-1 in overtime under assistant coach Igor Nikitin.
If you remember, Jaromir Jagr hand-picked Fleming to run the club.
...man, can it get any worse for Jagr over in Russia. Maybe there's some merit to Eklund's rumor that the Devils are trying to woo Jagr. Eklund? Merit? Nah.

Dubinsky & Staal Headed to All-Star Game
Steve Zipay at Blue Notes is reporting that both Brandon Dubinsky and Marc Staal have been named to the Eastern Conference Young Stars team for All-Star weekend in Montreal. Dubinsky was MVP of last year's game. This year's format will be Sophmores vs. Rookies.
...i know Dubinsky was MVP last year, but no way he deserves to play in that game ahead of Ryan Callahan.
Valiquette Tonight, Lundqvist Tomorrow
Sam Weinman at The Rangers Report says that Steve Valiquette, who needed stitches below his shoulder this week after a Dan Fritsche slap shot in practice tore through his pads, will start for the Rangers tonight in Buffalo, while Henrik Lundqvist gets the nod tomorrow in Ottawa.Weinman explains that Valiquette's recent loss in Ottawa along with Lundqvist's loss to Buffalo earlier this season may have led to Tom Renney's decision.
...i have no problem with this decision.

Befuddling
Ryan Dixon at The Hockey News tries to explain what's going on in Rangerland including this quote from New York Post's Larry Brooks...
"One of the most confounding NHL clubs in memory, the New York Rangers, a) completed the first half of their season with a negative goal-differential of minus-four, excluding shootouts; b) were 26th in the NHL with a power play operating at 14.5 percent; c) were in the league’s bottom five in goals-per-game at 2.54 per; d) were on pace to shatter the NHL record of 22 shorthanded goals against, having allowed 12; and e) saw their prize free agent signings of the previous two summers—Wade Redden, Scott Gomez and Chris Drury - all suffer through dismal opening three months. And yet, somehow, the Rangers were 24-14-3 and locked in an intense battle for first place in the Atlantic. Rarely has there been a better example of a whole being greater than the sum of its parts."
...Ryan, give up trying to figure out this team. We Ranger fans have.

Brooks: Find A Job for Messier
Larry Brooks at the New York Post/Fox Sports feels the Rangers need to find a job for Mark Messier with the organization..."Coming up on five years after he played his last game, Messier is on the outside looking in while contemporaries such as Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Al MacInnis and Ron Francis are making their marks in organizations around the league."
Broooks adds that Glen Sather and Messier had a lengthy discussion on a front office job last June in Ottawa before the Entry Draft, but that there's been no job offer since.
On working for the Rangers, Messier says...
"Obviously, my preference is to work with the Rangers," said Messier, who is planning to move back to New York next year with his family. "But at the same time, there has to be an open position and it has to be a position that makes sense for both parties."
...i wouldn't want to see Messier go directly behind the bench or become GM. I'd rather they give him an assistant coach or GM title first, let him learn the ropes and then promote. Just because he was great on the ice doesn't mean he'll be great right away in the front office.

Redden, Rozsival Make All-Underachiever Line-up
Scott Burnside at ESPN.com doesn't feel the announcement of NHL All-Star reserves has enough excitement so he came up with his own rosters for his own All-Star event including an All-Underachiever team...
THE ALL-UNDERACHIEVER LINEUP
We actually could have put together an entire team of underachievers, but no sense being too mean to too many so early in the new year, is there?...
Wade Redden, New York Rangers - Redden's play might be slowly turning a corner in New York, but it's been pretty grisly through the first half of the season for the longtime Senator who is in the first year of a six-year, $39 million deal. What was Glen Sather thinking?
Michal Rozsival, New York Rangers - Notice a trend here? Four years, $20 million. Earth to Glen … Earth to Glen … come in Glen.
...a few more weeks of Rozsival playing at his current level and I think he can be taken off this list.
...and when Burnside says Redden's play might be turning a corner does that mean he's now closer to the level of a high school player.

Links: Stay Away from Avery, No Star Power, Del Zotto Traded & Sanguinetti Makes AHL All-Star Team
Mark Herrman at Newsday gives ten reasons why the Rangers should stay away from Sean Avery.
Sam Borden, a guest poster at The Rangers Report, discusses the Rangers lack of a go-to guy.
TSN is reporting that Rangers prospect Michael Del Zotto and potential 2009 first overall pick Jon Tavares have been traded from the Oshawa Generals to the London Knights. This trade has no effect on Del Zotto's status with the Rangers.
The official AHL website reports that Rangers prospect Bobby Sanguinetti was named to the AHL All Star Game for team Planet USA. Steve Zipay at Blue Notes chimes in on this saying although Sanguinetti is improving he is not NHL ready.

Ranger Web Chat Breaking Story at Daily News

The Sports Hernia reports on the Daily News web page making Ranger beat writer Michael Obernauer's Rangers Web Chat a 'Live Developing Story' on their home page...
"Is a chat with a New York Daily News sportswriter (hockey, no less) really live, developing or even a story? With Hernia legend Michael Obernauer of all people? And worthy of a fiery red exclamation point? Great, no earthquakes or tsunamis today, but there's a hockey chat coming up.
Even the past five presidents took a backseat to what we can only imagine was a spirited, emoticon-laden chatfest for the ages."
...must have been a slow news day.
...hat tip to Puck Daddy for the link.
Korpikoski Back in the Line-up
Sam Weinman at The Rangers Report says Lauri Korpikoski skated on a line with Brandon Dubinsky and Nikolai Zherdev at practice today.
Weinman observed a very annoyed Aaron Voros, who looks to be the odd man out, being comforted by Markus Naslund after practice.
...Voros better be annoyed with his play of late not the decision to pull him back out of the line-up as that was a no-brainer.

Lundqvist Headed to All-Star Game
Newyorkrangers.com is reporting that Henrik Lundqvist will be the Rangers lone representative at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 in Montreal. This is Lundqvist's first All-Star nod. Here is Lundqvist on the nomination...
"It's a great honor to be in the All-Star Game," said Lundqvist. "I haven't been there yet and there are a lot of goaltenders out there who are tough competition, so to make it as a goalie feels really nice."
...i was wondering if the NHL was going to take back Lundqvist's All-Star nod after last night's performance. Just kidding. Well deserved Hank.
Renney: Maybe I've Got to be More Vocal
Sam Weinman at Ranger Reports says that following last night's loss to Montreal, Tom Renney admitted he needs to voice his frustrations to the referees a little more...“Maybe I’ve got to be more vocal and try to get a call or two. It seems to work for other teams,” the coach said. “It’s not an easy game to officiate, but it’s disconcerting when others seem to be able to do that.”
...i've been calling for Renney to do this for years. I would love to see him lose it on a ref and start throwing sticks or even the bench after a bad call goes against the Rangers.
Eklund: Devils Trying to Get Jagr this Year
Eklund at HockeyBuzz is reporting...
"Two different sources, one oversees, agree that the NJ have (sic) serious interest in Jaromir Jagr and are trying to find Jagr a way out of his Russian contract. There are several rumours that the KHL may be in deep trouble here with players across the board being asked to take serious cuts in salary midway through the season."
...the line for criticizing this rumor forms to the left. Wow!!!!

Rangers Stay at #10 in Fox Sports Power Rankings
The Rangers stayed at #10 in the Fox Sports Power Rankings for the week of January 6, 2009...
10. Rangers - The Rangers split the two games they played in Week 13. Once again the Blueshirts gave up a short-handed goal to the opposition, giving them a league-leading 12 shorties-against after only 40 games. The struggling New York club comes into Week 14 losers of four of its last five games.

Words Worse Than Biting In The NHL
ESPN.com is reporting that the NHL has suspended Ottawa Senators forward Jarkko Ruutu only two games for biting Boston Bruins forward Andrew Peters on Tuesday night. Meaning Sean Avery received four more games for saying 'sloppy seconds' than Ruuttu (whose reputation is only a notch better than Avery's) did for partaking in cannibalism. That makes sense. Only in Bettman's NHL. If you haven't seen the video of Ruutu chomping down here you go...

Canadiens 6, Rangers 3

The New York Rangers (24-15-3) lost to the Montreal Canadiens (23-10-6) by the score of 6-3, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...to tell you the truth, I'm not too upset over this loss. I thought they played hard and battled all night. Unfortunately for the Rangers, Lundqvist had a few brain farts in the first period and they were undermined by an atrocious hooking call on Voros in the third period that opened up the flood gates.
...i am loving Petr Prucha right now. The question is, do they look to trade him while his stock is high or hold on to him hoping that he can sustain this for the rest of the year? My vote is for keeping the guy.
...quietly Rozsival is turning his season around very quickly. He now has five goals in his last seven games giving him seven goals and 14 assists on the season. Maybe he was worth all that money. OK maybe not. Now we just need to work on Redden finding his game.
...the first two lines seem to be working very well, unfortunately the Playstation Line is having a tough time rekindling some of that early season magic. Maybe sticking Fritsche in there over Voros could do the trick.
...in case anyone didn't notice, Lang's empty netter to clinch the game was a short-handed goal giving the Rangers 13 short-handed against this season. Oh yeah and another o'fer on the power play.
...the next five games are on the road for the Rangers starting on Friday night in Buffalo.
