...still a work in progress over at seanavery.com. But once they get the site filled up, it should be fun to visit. Definitely something worth adding to your favorites.

Torts: It can’t be all on the shoulders of a Prospal and Gaborik

Michael Obernauer at The Blueshirts Blog has this quote from John Tortorella after last night's game...

“Guys like Higgy and Cally, players like that - it can’t be all on the shoulders of a Prospal and Gaborik,” Tortorella said. “We need some help elsewhere. Higgy needs to get going, Cally needs to get going. Dru is a guy that’s working hard but is coming up empty. In my mind he’s a little bit different than the other two because I think Dru’s been more involved. But we need to get something there.”

On Callahan getting caught from behind on a breakaway...

“Cally got caught from behind; it’s happened quite a bit with Cally the first part of the year. You know how I feel about him, I think he’s going to be a huge part of the team, but for some reason it’s just not happening for him, and he tends to get caught right now when he’s breaking in. Hopefully we’ll pick up another step with him and we’ll get some opportunities.

“I believe he is going to bounce back, but we need to get it going now. For us to get out of a little bit of a jam here, losing two in a row, we need to get some help from some guys that need to be part of the club.”

...Callahan has been taking a little bit of a beating these last few days. I'm confident he'll be able to bounce back quickly, but this is the first time I've seen him being criticized since he was sent down to Hartford two years ago.

...Higgins on the other hand, I'm really starting to worry about. After struggling the first few games he really seemed to find himself, but when he couldn't find the back of the net his confidence has waivered. And Torts dropping him to the third line can't help.

Paying for Zipay & Newsday.com

Update, 12:13 p.m.:
Zipay follows-up on the below report by noting that if you have an RSS feed from Newsday.com (and are a non-subscriber) that you will have one click to read the latest post and if you follow him on Twitter his hyperlink to Blue Notes will continue for free as well.

Original Post:
Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that starting next Wednesday, if you are not an Optimum Online customer or Newsday subscriber, you will have to pay to use Newsday's website including Zipay's blog.

Zipay adds that non-subscribers will have to pay what comes out to 66 cents per day.

Here's Zipay's reasoning...

"Hess doesn’t give away gas, restaurants don’t offer free food, Blackberries aren’t handed out at subway stops.

Somebody’s producing the goods.

So are we."

...the newspaper industry has been absolutely destroyed by the internet and economy, so I can't kill Newsday for actually trying to make a profit. But my concern is that the hit in on-line readership that Zipay will face could affect the quality of his work. Meaning, Newsday may decide, hey, your readership is down so we won't be sending you to report from practice anymore or possibly deciding not to send him to away games. That would be devastating for us Ranger fans who rely on Zipay to get us the latest news.

...but be assured my friends, I am a Newsday subscriber, so I will have access to Zipay and will continue to post on what Zipay is reporting. Which probably isn't a good thing for Zipay or Newsday because why would you pay for something you could get here for free. Sorry Zip.

Video: Lundqvist in Newest Versus Ad

I was just e-mailed by someone at Versus asking if I could post their latest NHL spot which includes Henrik Lundqvist...

Rangers Named 3rd Best in Organization Ranking

Hockey's Future has ranked the Rangers #3 in their organization rankings...

Strengths: The Blueshirts' blueline is the jewel of the system. Ryan McDonagh was a key acquisition in the offseason from Montreal, and welcome defensive addition to go with Michael Del Zotto, Bobby Sanguinetti, and Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy. Russian power forward Evgeny Grachev has begun to emerge as a powerhouse in junior. The 19-year-old is the organization's top-flight scorer. Fellow Russian Artem Anisimov is also highly prized, and has begun his rookie campaign this season after a dominant year last year in the AHL. McDonagh's teammate with the University of Wisconsin, forward Derek Stepan, also turned heads as a freshman last year.

Weaknesses: The biggest deficit in the system is in goal. With three netminding prospects in the organization, none have distinguished themselves. With difficulty as of late cultivating their own draft choices at the position, free agent Chad Johnson, a Hobey nominee, is the team's best bet as of now.

Top 5 prospects: 1. Evgeny Grachev, C, 2. Artem Anisimov, C, 3. Ryan McDonagh, D, 4. Derek Stepan, C, 5. Michael Del Zotto, D.

...how in the world is Del Zotto only the Rangers fifth best prospect when he's currently starring for the big club and being mentioned as a potential Calder Trophy winner?!?!?!?

...now that I got that off my chest. Every Ranger fan should be ecstatic about the future of this franchise. Not only do they have young kids performing at the top level right now they have a stock pile of younsters who should be making a difference for this team for year's to come.

Increase in Crease Crashers

Jim Kelley at SI.com says the NHL must stem the rising tide of crease-crashers and that Henrik Lundqvist has become an early season target...

Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been a oft-centered target this early season, apparently because coaches believe that getting him off his game or out of the game will go a long way toward collecting two points.

Just this week, Ruff told reporters in Buffalo that he saw a hit on Lundqvist that appeared to be part of a tactic. "I think some of that is strategy now," he told John Vogel of the Buffalo News. "I think that's going to be the trend to disrupt teams that aren't giving up a lot, or a hot goaltender. I more than expect it. It's not anything new. I think when teams get frustrated with not scoring goals, then you get more and more powerful people going through the paint."

...it's obvious team's are taking runs at Lundqvist this year. And sure the NHL can crack down on these "crease-crashers" but the only real way to stop this is for Brashear to finally start earning his money and annihilate the next player that even sneezes on Lundqvist.

Kotalik, Del Zotto Early Season Surprises

In his 10 Early Season Suprises feature at Fox Sports, Spector names both Ales Kotalik and Michale Del Zotto...

Under the heading "Returning to Form" Spector says this about Kotalik...

"It was widely believed the best years of L.A. Kings forward Ryan Smyth, Dallas Stars center Brad Richards, N.Y. Rangers winger Ales Kotalik and Washington Capitals center Brendan Morrison were far behind them...Kotalik, signed as a free agent by the Rangers, was scoring at nearly a point-per-game rate through nine games..."

...the guy has been worth every penny of his much criticized (including by me) $3 million per contact.

While under the heading "Rookie Sensations" he has this to say about Del Zotto...

"Topping the list is blueliner Michael Del Zotto, who not only leads all rookie scorers but also provides the Rangers with the kind of playmaking defenseman they've lacked since Brian Leetch left town."

...you always hate to see the comparison to Leetch as its not fair to put so much, so early on Del Zotto, but, man, if he keeps this up the sky is the limit for this kid.

Chelios Rejected Rangers AHL Contract

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Chris Chelios rejected the Rangers AHL contract offer to play in Hartford to sign a deal with the Chicago Wolves in order to be closer to his family...

"We'd talked a number of times over the summer, and I talked to Torts [head coach John Tortorella] at the U.S. Olympic evaluation camp, but they told me the Rangers were going in a different direction with their kids," Chelios told The Post by phone. "I see that their guys are off to a good start, but if they're looking for veteran help down the road, I'd love to play there."

Brooks notes that the Rangers are likely to monitor Chelios as well as other veteran candidates for the seventh blue-line spot.

On potentially coming to the Rangers, Chelios adds...

"If the Rangers need help and are interested, Chicago shouldn't be too far away for them to come take a look."

...i actually think Chelios would be a perfect fit as a seventh defenseman for this team. A veteran presence they can plug in there for a spot start. Plus if the Rangers are lucky enough to get back into the playoffs his experience in the lockeroom, especially with Del Zotto and Gilroy will be invaluable.

Rangers Talk Loss to Devils

Quotes released by Rangers...

John Tortorella on facing adversity…
“I thought we stood up pretty good here tonight, being down 2-0. Third period, I thought we were playing well. A kind of funny goal goes in on us and we are just not able to score the next one. This is when you start finding out about your club, when you go through situations like this. It is a long year, but these are the type of situations where you play your next game…how some guys react. I am not disappointed in the team as far as how they played. I thought they made some good plays. We made some bonehead plays that cost us but I like the way we battled back. The guys stayed together so we will see what happens when we play Montreal.”

Henrik Lundqvist on tonight’s game…
“It hurts to lose the game. We came back after the first couple of periods. They came out pretty strong. When you lose the puck at the wrong time of the game, it is going to really hurt you. We came back and played really well in the second half of the game. It is a tough way to lose a game.”

Chris Drury on the third period…
“Other than the bounce (on the Devils third goal) tonight I thought our third (period) was pretty good. I thought we had good chances. Sometimes you don’t get the bounces you need in the third and you lose the game.”

For more quotes and post-game go to Blue Notes and Ranger Rants.

Devils 4, Rangers 2

The New York Rangers (7-3-0) lost to the New Jersey Devils (5-3-0) by the score of 4-2, tonight. For a recap and box score go to Yahoo! Sports and newyorkrangers.com.

...despite the loss I thought that was a very entertaining game. Rangers really need to get some guys going. I'm looking at you Higgins and Callahan.

...tough night at the office for Staal and Girardi. A combined -4 and their turnovers were responsible for all the goals. Minus the empty netter.

...sort of a big difference in goaltending when Lundqvist is in there instead of Valiquette.

...loved Avery's game tonight. A fight, tough around the net, shots on goal. The only thing missing was a Rangers win.

...i can't believe I'm saying this but I thought Rozsival had a really solid game defensively.

...Torts needed to give the same speech between the 2nd and 3rd that he did during the first intermission.

...not sure what to think about the line changes. Torts seemed to find something in the second, but that didn't carry over into the third until Torts started mixing again. Should be interesting to see what combinations Torts comes up with at tomorrow's practice.

...Gaborik by the way is on pace for 50.

...Kotalik continues to surprise me as he now has points in 7 of 10 games.

...happy to see Brashear get scratched after a brutal game vs. Sharks.

...wow I can't believe I made it to the end of my recap without praising Del Zotto. Del Zotto is awesome. Sorry I couldn't contain myself.

...one day off for Torts to figure out what's gone wrong these last two games before heading to Montreal.

Rangers vs. Devils (Game 10)

More Del Zotto Calder Talk

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy looks at the wide open Calder Trophy race for top rookie in the NHL and mentions Michael Del Zotto as a serious candidate...

Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto wasn't even mentioned in the 2009-10 Hockey's Future Calder watch, which should tell you everything you need to know about how ahead of schedule he's been for New York. He's playing fewer minutes on average than fellow Rangers rookie D-man Matt Gilroy (19:04), but he's third in the League in average power-play ice time (4:14) behind John Tavares (4:44) and Victor Hedman (5:23, which is currently ninth most in the NHL).

Wyshynski adds that defensemen have a large hill to climb to win the Calder and if Del Zotto is going to win, it will be with an impressive offensive body of work; which will depend greatly on whether the Rangers' offense continues to excel.

...i think the most impressive part about Del Zotto is with all this praise being dumped on him it doesn't seem to have gone to his head. At least not yet. He's been very humble and grounded.

New Third Line; Callahan on Notice

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that John Tortorella has configured a new third of Lisin-Anisimov-Higgins. This most likely means Ales Kotalik is headed back to fourth line duties.

On Lisin, Torts said...

"We see a lot of skill in him," the coach said..."sometimes I have to take a chance to put him in more offensive situations, if Higgins isn't going well or Cally isn't going. "

Tortorella also noted tonight was a big game for Chris Higgins "to get back on the right road."

Meanwhile, Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants says that Tortorella seemed to put second line right wing Ryan Callahan on notice by saying he hasn’t gotten quite the offensive production he wants out of him.

Gross adds that Tortorella also acknowledged Callahan’s importance to the team and said he has to be counted on as one of the top players.

...i have no problem with Torts going with the hot hand in Lisin, who it seems was able to take a deep breath while playing on the fourth line and find his game.

...i hope Torts isn't expecting too much offense from Callahan because he is no more than a 20-25 goal scorer.

Gaborik, Callahan at Optional Skate

Both Steve Zipay and Andrew Gross, via Twitter, are reporting that Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan are on the ice for this morning's optional skate and should be good to go tonight vs. the Devils.

...great news. Hopefully, they'll be at full strength tonight.

Former Rangers Make Undeserving Starting Lineup Figure List

Sean Leahy at Puck Daddy lists the 10 Most Undeserving Starting Lineup Figures, including three former Rangers...

1999 - Mike Dunham, Nashville Predators
Someone had to represent the expansion Predators, right? I guess I can understand the Kenner representatives' decision, as I'd imagine it'd be tough to choose between Dunham, Cliff Ronning, and Sergei Krivokrasov. Formerly a teammate with Garth Snow at the University of Maine, it's obvious that the New York Islanders general manager failed at convincing Dunham to go with the "pillow" look for his goalie pads.

...i still haven't forgiven Dunham for ruining Mike Richter's jersey retirement night. FYI Gaborik scored the game winner that night for the Wild.

2000 - Anson Carter, Boston Bruins
There's no question about whether or not Carter deserved one. He produced early in his career and then later when he was sandwiched in-between the Sedin twins in Vancouver as part of "The Brothers Line". The abomination is putting Carter in one of those atrocious Kodiak bear third jerseys instead of the beloved spoked "B".

...hell, they should have made one of Carter in a Rangers jersey for being the sole reason the Rangers franchise turned when he was traded to Washington for Jaromir Jagr.

Leahy also lists former Ranger Niklas Sundstrom as a member of the Sharks.

Rissmiller Reassigned to Red Wings AHL Affiliate

Update, 11:05 a.m.:
Beyond the Blueshirts, via Twitter, reports the Wolf Pack were at their AHL veteran limit so they needed to move Rissmiller in order to make room for the newly signed Mathieu Dandenault.

Original Post:
According to the AHL transaction report the Rangers have reassigned Patrick Rissmiller to the Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.

...not sure what it means when you reassign a player to another team. Don't know if the Red Wings take on his entire salary ($1 million) or if the Rangers get anything (draft pick?) in return. If anyone knows, leave an explanation in the comments section.

...either way not a big deal as Rissmiller had no future with the Rangers franchise.

Richter, Messier Tribute Videos

Last night during the Lester Patrick Award ceremony the below videos were played in honor of Mike Richter and Mark Messier...

Del Zotto Making All the Difference

In his article on the impact D-men everywhere are having right now, good and bad, Ryan Dixon at The Hockey News leads off with Michael Del Zotto...

"Start at the top of the blueliner scoring charts, where you’ll find 19-year-old New York rearguard Michael Del Zotto in the Manhattan-based penthouse with four goals and nine points after nine games.

The Rangers’ hot start is directly linked to Del Zotto’s play as that of Henrik Lundqvist and Marian Gaborik."

...i'm running out of adjectives to describe this kid. Maybe I need him to struggle for one game so I have something else to say about Del Zotto other than he's awesome.

Also throwing praise at Del Zotto is ESPN.com's EJ Hradek who has Del Zotto on his "Calder Watch"...

Michael Del Zotto, D, New York Rangers
The 19-year-old Del Zotto is the latest young defenseman to emerge from the talented class of 2008 (selected 20th overall). He earned his way onto the Rangers' roster with an impressive training camp. A strong skater with excellent puck skills, the Ontario native has been a big early-season help to a power play that struggled to score last year. Through Tuesday's games, he led all rookies with four goals and nine points. The Rangers' coaching staff has been careful not to overexpose their kid defenseman, keeping him to a reasonable average ice time of 15:25. So far, he has not looked out of place in the NHL.

You have to be an ESPN Insider to read the entire article.

More Messier GM Questions

Similar to Arthur Staple's story in Newsday yesterday, Michael Farber at SI.com wonders if Mark Messier is willing to do the grunt work required to become a successful GM....

"So if Messier can forget how much he is revered in the hockey world and embrace the grunt work, he could be a first-class executive. But if the Being Mark Messier thing seduces him, the Rangers would be making a mistake."

...what is with all the questioning of whether Messier is willing to do the neccessary work? The guy was one of the hardest working players in the league. I know he's been out of the NHL for awhile now, but you have to assume once he's around the team on a daily basis his competitive juices will start flowing again.

Messier on the importance of scouting...

"You can't spend your way out of mistakes now."

...i'm already more comfortable with Messier over Sather as GM with that quote.

Dubinsky Being Considered for Team USA

Jeff Z. Klein at Slap Shot reports that even though he was not invited to the United States Olympic team’s orientation camp in August, Brandon Dubinsky is now being seriously considered for a spot on Team USA...

“We’re looking at him closely,” said Brian Burke, the United States general manager, “along with Ryan Callahan and Chris Drury from the Rangers.”

...assuming Dubinsky's struggles last year led to him not being invited to orientation camp. However, his strong start to the season has been too good to ignore.

...unfortunately for the Rangers, this means another one of their top players is going to be susceptible to injury in the Olympics.

Who Has the Best Goalie Mask?

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Montreal's Jacques Plante debuting the first goalie mask in a regular season game, TSN asks who has the best mask in the NHL.

TSN selected one goalie from each of the 30 clubs as candidates for the big prize.

Steve Valiquette's Spiderman mask was chosen over Henrik Lundqvist's.

To view each mask click here. To vote click here.

The results will be announced during the NHL on TSN broadcast on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when the Toronto Maple Leafs face the Dallas Stars (8pm et/5pm pt).

...i went with Craig Anderson's Abominable Snowman mask. Pretty cool. Sorry Vali.

Torts: We Didn't React Very Well

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants has this quote from John Tortorella on his main concern with the loss Monday night...

“I thought we were playing very well,” Tortorella said. “Their first goal, I thought it was a bad goal. I think Valley knows that too. But I don’t think we reacted very well as a team. We haven’t had too many bad goals go in on us this year. There has to be a better reaction than we had. We lost our momentum there and we took some penalties and they end up scoring on a power play to make it 2-2. We lost ourselves when something happened that hadn’t happened to us this year. That’s an area we have to correct. You have to handle those momentum swings and a little bit of adversity in the game. Little by little we’re finding out about our team and hopefully we’ll get better at that.”

...mental toughness, as Tortorella has alluded to numerous times, has been a problem with this team for the last few years. It seems that once things start going downhill for the Rangers it becomes impossible for them to right the ship.

Gaborik, Callahan Not Dressed at Practice

Update, 2:40:
Steve Zipay of Blue Notes follows-up on the below item, stating that Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan were sent home from practice today due to illness...

"They were sick, colds or something, and we wanted to get them out of here to keep them away from the other guys," said coach John Tortorella.

...good choice by Torts. The last thing they need is half the team going down with an illness.

With Gaborik and Callahan out these were the lines:
Prospal-Dubinsky-Lisin
Avery-Drury-Kotalik
Higgins-Anisimov-Voros
Brashear and Boyle were spares.

Original Post:
Steve Zipay of Blue Notes and Jim Cerny of newyorkrangers.com, via Twitter, report that Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan did not dress for practice. No reason given.

Cerny adds that the Rangers had a very high tempo practice complete with hard skating drills, plenty of pushups and sprints.

Assuming they'll have answers after practice.

...hopefully the tough practice was the reason to hold both players out and give them an extra day's rest. Especially important with Gaborik.

Can Messier Duplicate Success?

Arthur Staple at Newsday wonders if Mark Messier can duplicate his on-ice success in the front office...

"It’s a hard lesson many stars have to learn, that their talent and charisma and playing smarts don’t translate into front-office glory. Messier still has the look of a leader and in his prime, he was never one to slack off the hard work.

A promising start, then. But only the beginning."

Messier on star athletes becoming great coaches or GMs...

“I don’t really agree that because you were a superstar, you can’t be a good coach,” Messier said Tuesday as he and Reed stood outside the Garden to promote a new sponsorship agreement with Delta Air Lines. “Good teams, good organizations help people become good coaches."

...Messier is too hard a worker and has too much pride to fail. I look forward to the day he becomes Rangers GM.

Richter, Messier Talk Lester Patrick

Tonight Mike Richter, Mark Messier and Jim Devellano (Red Wings Sr. Vice President) will be receiving the Lester Patrick Award, which is given for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.

The award was presented to the National Hockey League by the Rangers in 1966. It honors the memory of Patrick, who spent 50 years in hockey as a player, coach and general manager and was a pioneer in the sport's development.

Here are links to video of Richter and Messier paying tribute to Patrick...

Mike Richter talks about the Patrick Family and Lester Patrick's legacy here.

Mark Messier talk about Lester Patrick's legacy in hockey on the eve of receiving the 2009 Lester Patrick Trophy here.

Torts Has Avery Walking too Fine a Line?

Rick Carpiniello at The Rangers Report wonders if the fall-out from last year's benching of Sean Avery in the playoffs is hindering his effectiveness...

"Mostly I will be interested to see how Sean Avery plays against his old foil, you-know-who. I will be interested to see if this is the game where Avery becomes a difference-maker again. I am not blaming Avery for anything, not at all. In fact, he has been one of the more reliable Rangers so far. But I haven’t seen the guy who was a difference-maker in almost every game he played down the stretch last season. He has only four penalty minutes, to boot.

And I wonder if any of that is fallout from his benching for undisciplined penalties against Washington in the playoffs. I wonder if the fine line that John Tortorella has him walking is too fine a line for him to play the way he needs to play. I wonder if he needs to be more on the edge, needs to cross that line sometimes. And I wonder if the Rangers just have to live with the idea that he will cost you sometimes, but that the sometimes-over-the-line Avery is the really effective one."

...Avery has been invisible the last three games. No trash talking, no pestering, no Avery being Avery. And its no coincidence that the Rangers play has slipped in those three games. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player, who is not an elite performer, mean so much to a team's success. Sure, Lundqvist keeps the Rangers in every game and Gaborik's scoring ability is always a threat, but if Avery isn't wreaking havoc the Rangers play seems to falter.

...now the problem Tortorella has is if he takes the reins off of Avery does he turn into the undisciplined player we saw in the playoffs last year or the effective hard working, trash talking player that seemed to get the Anaheim Ducks off their game in his return from injury.

...either way, hopefully the site of Brodeur tomorrow night will snap him out of it.
