...what are your thoughts on Rangers signing Kovalchuk. I'm not sure how they get him under the cap even with sending Redden to Hartford. Wouldn't be any money left for Staal and Girardi.

McDonagh Signs with Rangers (Updated)

Arthur Staple at Newsday says the deal is for three-years $2.4 million. Which is the same deal Derek Stepan signed last week.

On the importance of the Rangers Prospect Camp on his decision to sign with the Rangers...
"The camp was important for a lot of reasons," McDonagh said. "First and foremost, I got to meet some of the Rangers staff members face to face and to have them meet me as well. Second, I got to know some of the other players in the organization. I thought it was important to build some relationships with them during a tough week of camp and getting to know them. The third thing was more for myself. I know the pro game is different from the college game, and I wanted to see if I was physically ready and mentally ready and everything like that."
...as expected. Can't imagine this kid isn't going to get every opportunity to make the club.
...unfortunately, I think the Rangers are going to stick with Redden and it's going to be Gilroy vs. McDonagh for the sixth defensive spot. If McDonagh loses out, I'd rather see him down in Hartford getting a regular shift than as the seventh defenseman. It will only be a matter of time before Redden plays himself out of a spot and McDonagh will be called up.
...i also caution everyone to give the kid some time. He's not going to be Brian Leetch on Day 1. There will be lots of mistakes and learning, but I'm looking forward to watching the kid develop.

The Boogie Man Hosts a Fighting Camp for Kids!!!
In a top 10 list of NHL nicknames, Mike Kamrowski at The Hockey Writers informs us that the Rangers newest signing Derek Boogaard hosts a fighting camp..."This guy is so into his job as a heavy weight that he, along with his brother Aaron, has his own camp for fighting- The Derek and Aaron Boogaard Fighting Camp for children ages 12-18."
...that is awesome. Boogaard is officially worth every penny of that contract.
Boogaard's nickname "The Boogie Man" comes in at #8 on the list.

Sorry, Thank You, Live Chat & New Feature
I just wanted to apologize for the lack of posts the last week. Between my family vacation and the 4th of July weekend, I obviously wasn't able to dedicate the amount of time I wanted towards the blog. But be assured I will be back and ready to go tomorrow morning.
And despite my lack of production recently, June was the most heavily trafficked month in the history of The New York Rangers Blog with over 63,000 hits and 102,000 page views. I'd be ridiculously appreciative if I had just one visitor a month, so that type of response is overwhelming. I thank everyone for their support and readership. Tell your friends.
To make up for the dearth of posts, I will be hosting another late night live chat Wednesday night starting at 10pm.
Finally, I will be unveiling a new feature on the blog next Monday that I'm really pumped about and I know you guys and gals will be as well.

Girardi Files For Arbitration
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants reports that Dan Girardi, a RFA, filed for arbitration before the 5pm deadline today.Girardi is seeking a contract of about $3 million per year over four years. Gross says odds are he and the Rangers will come to an agreement before he gets to any arbitration hearing.
Gross also gives an explanation of the arbitration process. Which Ranger fans should be familiar with after the Rangers declined Nikolai Zherdev's arbitration ruling last year.
...while I like what Girardi brings to the table (despite the Gaborik/Carcillo episode) $3 million seems like a bit much to me. I'd be happy with $2.5 million over four years.
Steve Zipay at Blue Notes posts the list of 31 players who filed for arbitration.
Speaking of RFA Rangers defensemen, Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy says Marc Staal could be poached from the Rangers this summer.
Rangers Take Boogaard Over Shelley Due to Age
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the reason the Rangers decided to bypass Jody Shelley for Derek Boogaard was almost exclusively due to age...
"I think Jody is a great guy who did a terrific job for us, but I just think this league and that role is too difficult to keep doing it at that age, and certainly for another two years, never mind three," the GM told Slap Shots. "I go back to Dave Semenko, who I think was the best ever at it, and he couldn't do it.
"I just think that's a job that needs to be filled by a younger man. And I think we got the toughest one out there. I'm never going to say anything bad about Jody, but I like Derek; I like the guy we got."
FYI Semenko was Gretzky's protection during the Oilers' first two Cup runs in 1984 and 1985 but essentially was finished by the time he was 30.

Torts Didn't Want Messier Near Dressing Room
Steve Simmons at the Toronto Sun reports that John Tortorella seemed to have a problem with Mark Messier being near the team last season...
"Did you know that John Tortorella made it clear he didn’t want Mark Messier anywhere near the dressing room of the New York Rangers in the second half of the NHL season? Doesn’t sound like Messier is about to replace the should-be-replaced Glen Sather any day now."
...not sure where to start with this. If true, I'm sure there was a good reason that was talked about between the two.
...no way Torts, who has tremendous respect for the Rangers franchise (remember the locker room logo rule he implemented), would disrespect one of the greatest Rangers of all-time.

McDonagh on His Way
Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Wisconsin defenseman Ryan McDonagh will forego his senior year and sign with the Rangers..."The Post has been told that McDonagh, who had been undecided between turning pro and returning to Madison for his senior season, was won over by the environment at last week's Rangers' prospect camp during which he mixed with fellow hopefuls and the team's front-office personnel, notably general manager Glen Sather, coach John Tortorella and special assistants Mark Messier and Adam Graves."
Brooks also says Sather is in the market for a veteran free-agent defenseman who would serve as the team's sixth or seventh.
...if true, you've got to give the Rangers credit for putting on the full court press last week. Maybe the Knicks should use some of the Rangers strategies on LeBron.
...expect McDonagh to get a real shot at making the team in camp.

Potter on His Way Out
In Larry Brooks' article in the New York Post on the Brandon Prust signing he also reports that Corey Potter is apparently on his way out of the organization as a an unrestricted Group VI free agent..."The Rangers do have interest in retaining Potter, a 2003 fourth-round pick out of Michigan State who played a combined eight games the past two seasons, but they are leery of signing him to the one-way contract he's seeking because if sent down, he would be susceptible to re-entry waivers on the way back."
...while I like Potter and thought he played very well when called upon last season, if he is going to make demands that may hurt the Rangers I have no problem cutting ties with him. I do, however, hope something is able to get done as a team can never have enough defensive prospects.

Ethan Werek answers fans questions over at newyorkrangers.com, including this one...Mark from Las Vegas, Nevada, asks: You have surprised many in your growth as a player, are you ready to earn a spot this year?
Werek's response: I grew up with Mike (Del Zotto) and really looked up to him for a long time. Seeing what he did last year, coming into training camp and Traverse City and just really impressing the team. I really hope to do something like that. I think I've put in my time in junior and I feel like I'm ready to make that jump to the next level, so every day I'm training like a pro and trying to live like one. I just hope that in September I'll be living in Manhattan.
...met Werek at Draft Party (see pic). Not as big as Kreider but nice size who should be able to make smooth transition to pro game.
...not sure if we'll see Werek in Ranger blue this year, but next year he'll be a player to watch at camp.
Boogaard Was Offered 4-Year $7 Million Deal from Oilers
Arthur Staples at Newsday reports a source that says Derek Boogaard had a four-year, $7-million offer on the table from the Oilers....i know Boogaard was the guy Sather was targeting as the Rangers next tough guy, but if another team sets the market way to high on the guy it doesn't mean you have to pay it.
...it's called Plan B. Let the other team take that outrageous cap hit.
Rangers Re-Sign Prust
Newyorkrangers.com reports that the Rangers have re-signed Brandon Prust.Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants says its a two-year deal with $1.6 million.
...another priority that Sather has taken care of on the cheap. Except for the Boogaard fiasco, I'm happy with the Rangers off-season so far. And when I say happy, keep in mind that I'm not at all happy with the cap situation the Rangers are in because of the utter stupidity of Sather, however, based on team need with money restraints so far I like what Sather and the Rangers have done. Would still like a scoring winger. Heard Frolov is looking for $5 million per.
...now lets sign Staal and Girardi.

Just When I Thought Sather Was Getting It
Earlier today when I was posting the free agent signings I was pretty excited that the Rangers were able to get a backup goaltender and re-sign Erik Christensen pretty cheap.
And after seeing Sather smartly not try to match the Flyers ridiculous three-year $3.3 million contract offer for Jody Shelley, I was convinced that the Rangers President and GM had changed his ways.
But as always, Glen reminds us why we hate him so much by giving Derek Boogaard a 4-year $6.5 million contract. I know with Shelley headed to Philly the team needed an enforcer and I have nothing against Boogaard as I think he will fill the roll quite nicely but $1.625 million per when the Rangers are in salary cap hell?
Nice to see Sather come back to his senses by bring Vinny Prospal back for just $1 million plus bonus incentives. Not entirely on board with re-signing Prospal as I would have rather they used his money and the $600,000 per year they overpaid for Boogaard to sweeten the offer to get Colby Armstrong, who unfortunately signed with Maple Leafs for 3-years, $9 million.

But as always, Glen reminds us why we hate him so much by giving Derek Boogaard a 4-year $6.5 million contract. I know with Shelley headed to Philly the team needed an enforcer and I have nothing against Boogaard as I think he will fill the roll quite nicely but $1.625 million per when the Rangers are in salary cap hell?
Nice to see Sather come back to his senses by bring Vinny Prospal back for just $1 million plus bonus incentives. Not entirely on board with re-signing Prospal as I would have rather they used his money and the $600,000 per year they overpaid for Boogaard to sweeten the offer to get Colby Armstrong, who unfortunately signed with Maple Leafs for 3-years, $9 million.
