Dubinsky Talks Contract

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes was able to speak with Brandon Dubinsky today at an informal team scrimmage about his contract situation...

“I want to be a Ranger,” said Dubinsky, 23, still an unsigned, restricted free agent. “The Rangers want me here; something’s gonna get done real quick and this will all be an afterthought. I’m in here working hard, getting ready for the season, not worrying about that; everything falls into place eventually, so I’m not losing any sleep over it. Obviously there’s been a lot of speculation and stuff, but I know where we’re at and where we’re gonna be…It might be 12 days away from camp, but 12 days is a long time, you can have a lot of conversations in 12 days, it only takes one.”

...this Dubinsky quote has me feeling a whole lot better.

Zipay also has observations from scrimmage including locker assignments, Higgins scoring and Potter saying players have come into camp leaner than last year because of Tortorella's letter stating they better be in shape here and here.

Rangers = Doughnut

John Kreiser at NHL.com looks at the key questions for Eastern Conference teams and compares the Rangers to a doughnut...

New York Rangers -
What do the Rangers and the doughnuts at Tim Horton's (a new arrival in the Big Apple) have in common? A hole in the middle -- in the Rangers' case, that means the absence of a No. 1 center. With Scott Gomez gone to Montreal and high-scoring but oft-injured winger Marian Gaborik signed from Minnesota, the Rangers now have a winger who can put the puck in the net but no one who resembles a No. 1 center who can get him the puck -- and are tight enough against the cap that they likely won't be able to deal for one unless they're willing to give up some young talent.

...the Rangers are more like a doughnut factory there are so many holes (center, defense, power play).

...Sather took some chances this off-season, hopefully they'll pay off.

Drury Enshrined in Little League Hall of Excellence

TSN reports that on Saturday Chris Drury was enshrined into the Little League Museum Hall of Excellence.

On winning the Little League World Series in 1989 over Taiwan...

"Certainly, 20 years ago, I had one of the greatest weeks in my life," said Drury, getting a standing ovation from the crowd as he picked up his honour. "It's certainly not something I'll ever forget."

When asked to order his athletic accomplishments...

"I try to not rank anything, the Stanley Cup, the silver medal," Drury said. "It's something pure and innocent that whole summer growing as a team, growing as a family. ... It's still pretty special to me."

...i wonder if a Stanley Cup with the Rangers would top his list?

Bourque Stays Hot in QMJHL Preseason

Ranger prospect C Ryan Bourque continued his hot start to the QMJHL preseason on Sunday night, scoring a goal and adding the shootout winner in the Quebec Remparts' 4-3 win over visiting Chicoutimi.

Bourque, who was picked by the Rangers in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, now has three goals and two assists in three preseason games with Quebec.

For more on Bourque and other Ranger prospects visit newyorkrangers.com.

...with our lack of depth at center its too bad we can't bring Bourque up.

Preseason Tickets Go on Sale Tomorrow

Newyorkrangers.com reports that tickets to the Rangers' three preseason home games vs. Boston, Detroit and Washington on Sept. 15, Sept. 21 and Sept. 24 will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 1, through Ticketmaster via phone or online. To order click here. You can also do some online sports betting.

Rangers Still Rumored As Destination For Heatley

Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun gives his five possible destinations for Dany Heatley with the Rangers being one...

2. New York Rangers
GM Glen Sather likes to stick his nose into everything and this is where Heatley really wants to go. The Rangers refused to give up D Marc Staal and C Brandon Dubinsky at the draft for Heatley. They’d have to offer C Chris Drury, but Sather is loath to deal his captain. “The Rangers love players with star power and they could find a way to take on Heatley’s $7.5-million salary. Sather is the type of GM who doesn’t let players like Heatley get away,” said a league executive. With more than $6 million in cap room, the Rangers wouldn’t have to move much.

...it's hard to take any rumors involving the Rangers seriously as they're mentioned in almost every one b/c of Sather's willingness to overpay.

...i'm no cap expert, but I thought the Rangers had a lot less than $6 million available. If anyone knows, please post in comments.

...sorry for the late posts, I had my fantasy football draft today.

Lundqvist Filling Richter's Shoes?

In his guest blog post at the Rangers Report, Patrick Hoffman wonders if Henrik Lundqvist is the new Mike Richter...

"Doesn’t this come close to sounding like another star Broadway athlete that played between the pipes on Broadway for many years, one that put up solid numbers on more than a few sub-par clubs, won a Stanley Cup with a nearly perfect team, did a ton of charity work and was an all-around good guy? In my eyes, and may be yours, right now at least, Henrik Lundqvist is almost equivalent to the all-time winningest goaltender in Rangers’ history that starred for the Blueshirts for 14 seasons."

...my answer to that question is an emphatic "NO."

...while Lundqvist has been great as a Ranger, I've seen too many soft goals, long stretches of average play and playoff failures to even be considered in the same class as Richter.

...i think during Richter's career we Ranger fans got spoiled by his goaltending. His acrobatic and sometimes amazing saves became almost routine. Then after Richter was forced to retire we had to endure the goaltending follies of Herbert, McLean and Dunham. So now when we see Lundqvist dominating games we just assume he is as good if not better than Richter. But do yourself a favor, the next time "Rangers Classics" has a game from the 1990's sit down and watch Richter go to work. You'll realize there is no comparison.

Ranger Junior Prospects Continue to Impress

Jess Rubenstein at The Prospect Park has exhibition game recaps for three Ranger prospects playing Junior hockey.

In his North American debut, 2009 5th round pick Roman Horak, who had a goal and an assist, was named the game's first star in the Cilliwack Bruins (WHL) 4-2 win.

Chris Doyle followed up his exhibition debut (1g) with an even better performance scoring two goals and adding an assist as the Prince Edward Island Rockets defeated the Arcadie-Bathurst Titan 5-4.

And finally, Ryan Bourque had an assist as his Quebec Remparts defeated the Chicoutimi Saguenéens 6-3. However Bourque was a -2. Bourque now has four points this exhibition season.

...man you know I need the Rangers season to start when I'm posting about junior hockey exhibition games.

Sanguinetti Attends Upper Deck Rookie Photo Shoot

Rangers prospect D Bobby Sanguinetti was recently invited to the Upper Deck NHL Rookie Photo Shoot.

For video click here.

...nice to see Sanguinetti getting some recognition. It will also be nice to see him get some ice time with the Rangers this year as well.

...definitely check out the video where you can see Sanguinetti smartly getting a prime spot next to number #1 pick John Tavares of the Islanders in one of the group photos.

Lots of Roster Problems for Rangers

Lyle Richardson over at Fox Sports looks at potential roster problems for every Eastern Conference team and says this about the Rangers...

New York Rangers: Trading away Scott Gomez this summer leaves the Rangers without an experienced first-line center. It remains to be seen if oft-injured star winger Marian Gaborik, signed this summer via free agency, can play a full season. There's legitimate concern about the caliber of their defense corps. If overpaid veterans Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival fail to step up this season the Blueshirts could be in trouble.

...this roster observation has me a little nervous going into the season.

Rangers Need to Step Up Interest in Kessel

Mark Everson at the New York Post says if the Rangers are interested in Bruins restricted free agent Phil Kessel they're going to have to setup their efforts as trade talks are heating up with other clubs...

"The Rangers are believed to have talked seriously with the Bruins about trading for Kessel, but not lately. At least two other teams are believed to have stepped up their bidding of late. Kessel is rehabbing from rotator cuff surgery, but may be ready to skate when camps open next month.

A righty center/right wing, Kessel led the Bruins with 36 goals last season, despite missing 12 games, and stood plus-23. He went 6-5-11 and plus-7 in 11 playoff games for Boston. He won't turn 22 until Oct. 2."

Kessel is demanding a $5 million-a-year salary, which the Bruins can't afford due to their cap situation.

...if there was ever a spot where the Rangers were going to trade Dubinsky this would be it. Kessel is a rising star in the league and, in my opinion, has a higher ceiling than Dubinsky.

...cap wise not sure how the Rangers can fit him in, especially since the Bruins will not be able to take the salaries of Redden or Rozsival back.

Season Subscriber Summer Festival Rescheduled for Sept. 5

This weekend's Rangers Season Subscriber Summer Festival has been rescheduled for September 5th due to forecasted weather conditions.

The original festival was scheduled for this Saturday, August 29th at the Madison Square Garden Training Center in Tarrytown, N.Y. Rangers players and alumni who planned on attending were Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, Aaron Voros, John Tortorella, Nick Fotiu, Dave Maloney, Adam Graves, Ron Duguay and Brian Mullen.

Activities included a Summer barbecue featuring youth hockey clinics, autograph and photo sessions, open skates, player forums and interactive games.

...according to the official press release the festival is "...to celebrate the loyal and passionate Rangers fans by uniting them with their favorite players and alumni for an unforgettable day." And obviously in the world of the Dolans you're only considered a loyal and passionate Rangers fan if you're a season ticket holder.

...how about a festival for the rest of us lowely Rangers fans?

Avery to Replace Roenick as Best Interview?

With the retirment of Jeremy Roenick, Craig Custance at The Sporting News gives a top 10 of who will replace him as the best interview in the NHL and Sean Avery makes the list at #6...

6. Sean Avery, New York: I've got to admit it. I miss the pre-suspension Sean Avery. He was another guy who you never knew what to expect when you sat down to talk. Last summer, I was in Dallas and was interviewing him about the Rangers off-season moves and he said there was no way Wade Redden would work out in New York. I almost pulled a groin getting back to the hotel to put his comments on a blog. And that was one of the tamest things he said during that Dallas trip. To his credit, he's toned his act WAY down since crossing the line last year. He really had no choice. But here's hoping he finds a happy medium this season to keep things interesting.

...after what happened last year, I don't think we're going to be hearing anymore 'Sloppy Second' quotes coming from Avery. But we can hope.

Help Me, Help You

With training camp just around the corner, I need some advice from my readers.

Please let me know how I can better this blog. Let me know what you like, what you don't like, things I should be doing, anything. I asked this last year and got some great advice.

Messier Promotes Head Safety

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy reports on Mark Messier's crusade to promote head safety in hockey...

Here's a quote from Messier...

"When helmets were first designed, they were designed to stop catastrophic injuries -- meaning death in our sport," he said. "As we've progressed in our sport through the years, we've come upon an epidemic we didn't see coming many years back, which is the concussion problem. Our [current] helmets aren't designed to stop concussions."

Messier also briefly talked about his future as special assistant with the Rangers...

"Not sure where this will take me," said Messier, during a conference call this week. "I'll take my time, see what I really like and if I really like it. I feel I have a lot to offer, obviously."

...great job by Messier promoting safety, as these helmets sound like they can prevent concussions that may come from a nasty elbow, which Messier knows all about.

More Guest Blogging at Rangers Report

The Rangers Report continues its week of guest blogging (I think they're actually doing it next week also) with Doodie Machetto giving his five keys to the Rangers Season, which includes the third defensive pair, special teams, Artem Anisimov, John Tortorella and Glen Sather.

Injury Prone Gaborik Could Hold Rangers Back

Ryan Dixon at The Hockey News gives one reason for every team to worry this year. Here's what he said about the Rangers...

New York Rangers - We actually come to refer to Marian Gaborik’s time in Minny as his “Doug Jarvis years” after he barely touches the ice on Broadway.

Jarvis hold's the NHL record for consecutive games played with 964.

...it's pretty scary when the Rangers entire season rests on a player who can't stay healthy.

Rangers Fan Base Ranked #12

In their annual fan base rankings The State of Hockey News says Ranger fans are ranked #12 down 5 spots from last year...

#12 - New York Rangers - 15.5
Pct. of Capacity in 2008-09: 99.8% (18,172, 12th in the NHL)
Online Presence: 5.5
Last Year's ranking: 7th
Justification: The Rangers will always have a distinctive advantage of being NYC's #1 team regardless of where it finishes in the standings. If you ever watch the NHL Network's "NHL Live" program New York Rangers fans are always quick to call in to offer their thoughts to the lucky guys (sometimes gals) working the show. New Yorkers are tough on their teams but they're immensely loyal and that is certainly the case for the Rangers as well. However there are signs that some of that strength is eroding slightly. The Rangers lately have basically been just good enough to get to the playoffs only to be bounced in the 1st round and the fans clearly have much higher expectations and do not have a whole lot of faith in General Manager Glen Sather. For the first time in a while the Rangers failed to average a sellout for the season and that should set off some alarm bells even though the difference is quite small. It could a prelude to a more notable drop if the team does not show some definite progress and with Sather hedging his playoff hopes on the wonky groin of the often injured Marian Gaborik it does not provide a wide margin of error.

...the Ranger fan base should be #1 for having to deal with Sather and the Dolans. The Dolans are the single reason for the Rangers not averaging a sellout for the season last year as they've priced out the average fan. The Rangers organization has become a money making enterprise for the Dolans not entertainment for the fans. It's a shame because New York is a great hockey city and the Rangers fan base should be in the top 5 of this list every year. But with the economy where it is and the Dolans more worried about the bottom line, the real Ranger fans are starting to stay away from the World's Most Famous Arena. Which is obviously hurting our reputation as a great hockey fan base.

Drury's Little League Success Began Reputation as Leader

Ross McKeon at Yahoo! Sports takes a look back at how Chris Drury's early success in life made him the leader he is today and will hopefully lead to a successful run for the US Olympic team...

"Those same leadership skills witnessed by a national viewing audience when Drury had barely turned 13 are the same that the U.S. is counting on. Burke talked specifically about those characteristics in terms of Drury, who is likely competing for his last shot at the Olympics since it’s doubtful the NHL will participate in the next Games."

Drury will be enshrined in the Little League Hall of Excellence this week.

...this is a big season for Drury with the Rangers. This is unequivocally his team and he needs to step up his game.

Greatest Messier Photo Ever!!!

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy posts this gem of a photo with Mark Messier during his Oiler days with Gary Coleman of "Diff'rent Strokes" fame...

"It wasn't just the seeming randomness of the pairing. It's the autograph book and the writing implement that's at least half the size of Mr. Coleman. It's the hair on Messier's head, the pint in his hand and the lingering question of "where's that other hand, exactly?"

It's the random assortment of equipment, hangers and straps behind them that looks like something the detectives discover in a suspect's basement on "C.S.I." And yes, it's the fact that Messier apparently receives VIPs while wearing a washcloth."

...fully laughing out loud at work right now. Awesome stuff.

Guest Blogger Day 2 @ Rangers Report

Mike G. takes his turn on Day 2 of the Ranger Reports "Guest Blogger Week" and wonders what the Rangers roster will look like on opening day...

"Glen Sather was a very busy GM this off-season and the Rangers will start the 2009-2010 season with a drastically different look than they had finishing off the 2008-2009 campaign. The revolving door to the Rangers locker room is still spinning thanks to the never ending slew of additions and subtractions we saw go down this off-season. Let’s go through a quick recap of the complete overhaul the Rangers roster went through since the regular season ended."

Mike G. includes possible line combinations and defensive pairings.

Grachev May Still Go Back to Brampton

Earlier today I posted a link to OHL Prospects that stated the Rangers had informed the Brampton Battalion that Evgeni Grachev would not be returned to them and would instead be playing in either the AHL or NHL.

However tonight the author of that post, Brock Otton, stated this in a post on HF Boards...

"Brock from OHL Prospects here. I don't have any confirmed information about Grachev at this time, and didn't mean for the blog to read as it did. What I meant to say, was that it's widely rumored in Brampton that Grachev won't be back. Rumored was meant to be in place in the article, but as a typo was left out. Sorry to get your hopes up."

...sort of an important word you left out there Brock.

...despite the misinformation, it is widely expected that Grachev will be playing in either New York or Hartford this year anyway.

...h/t to Beyond the Blueshirts.

Otton has since corrected his post at OHL Prospects.

Ranger Prospects Heeding Tortorella's Message

Jess Rubenstein at The Prospect Park reports on the early success of Ranger prospects this year which has been attributed to John Tortorella's message...

"In all the reports we have been getting on Ranger prospects the theme is the same; the prospects are showing up in great shape and wanting to work as hard as they possibly can.

Pick the name of a Ranger prospect and the theme will remain the same; their conditioning is excellent, their work ethic is strong and their focus is even better. If these kinds of reports do not get you excited for the season then odds are nothing will."

...this is an absolutley amazing report which should have every Rangers fan tickled pink about the team and organization's future.

...let's hope the Ranger players do the same.

Rangers Officially Announce Traverse City Roster & Schedule

Although it had already been announced by a Detroit Red Wings website, newyorkrangers.com, today, officially announced the Blueshirts Traverse City Tournament roster as well as the schedule...

"Fifteen of the 22 players participated in the Rangers' annual Prospect Development Camp earlier this summer. This includes 2009 draft picks Ethan Werek, Ryan Bourque, Scott Stajcer and Daniel Maggio. Roman Horak, the team's 2009 fourth-round pick out of the Czech Republic, will also go to Traverse City in preparation for his first full season in North America.

Defenseman Michael Del Zotto, the Rangers' 2008 first-round pick and forward Evgeny Grachev, who won the Ontario Hockey League's Rookie of the Year Award last season after being taken in the third round of the 2008 draft, will be returning to the tournament along with forwards Justin Soryal and Dale Weise, who both played for the Wolf Pack last season. Tysen Dowzak, a defenseman who spent most of last season in the WHL, is also back from the 2008 team."

The Traverse City tournament begins Sunday, Sept. 6, in Traverse City, Mich at the Detroit Red Wings' training facility.

Rangers In Talks With Seidenberg

According to Eishockey News, via The Goal Crease, the Rangers are in discussions with free agent defenseman Dennis Seidenberg formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes...

More specifically, the talks are currently with the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. "My agent has spoken with both clubs over the term of the contract. I would like a three-year contract."

...i know the Rangers have two to three spots open on the backend, but why are they talking about bringing this guy in? Only 5 goals, 25 assists last year with a -9 for a pretty good Carolina team.

...unless I'm missing something about this guy, not a good way to use the little cap space the Rangers have left.

Here's what Luke Decock at the News & Observer said about Carolina not re-signing Seidenberg...

"After making that long run last spring, and bringing in much-needed reinforcements on the blue line and in the toughness department while losing only Frantisek Kaberle, Dennis Seidenberg, Patrick Eaves and Anton Babchuk, there is more excitement at this stage of the season than there has been since -- well, since August 2006."

...should the Rangers really be looking to bring in a player whose former team's beat writer is writing that things for Carolina look promising this year because they made a bunch of great moves and only lost a few scrubs including Seidenberg?

Grachev Will Be in NHL or AHL this Year

Brook Otten at OHL Prospects reports that Rangers prospect F Evgeni Grachev will not be returning to his OHL team the Brampton Battalion this season...

"Hodgson and Duchene will most certainly be in the NHL, while Grachev will be in the NHL or AHL (with the Rangers already informing Brampton he won't be returning to them)."

...wow this is exciting news. Even if he doesn't make the club out of camp there's a strong possibility we could see Grachev with the Blueshirts at some point this season.

...h/t Beyond the Blueshirts on Twitter.

Rangers Better Be Ready for Grueling Camp

Stan Fischler at MSG.com says Ranger players better be ready for what could be the most rigorous pre-season camp in NHL history...

"If you happen to range between 18 and 35 years old and seek top-flight physical conditioning, there are two excellent possibilities.

1) You can enlist in the United States Marine Corps and start Boot Camp at Parris Island.

2) Or, if you're a New York Ranger, hockey's version of Boot Camp will begin next month under Master Sergeant John Tortorella. Either way, you pay the price.

If this doesn't evolve into THE most rigorous pre-season camp in NHL history, it certainly figures to be the most physically challenging any Blueshirt sextet has known."

Fischler also offers a list of players who are expected to improve.

...i wonder if these guys are actually scared of what awaits them. I know i'd be.

Guest Blogger Week Starts at Rangers Report

"Guest Blogger Week" started today at the Rangers Report with Nasty1 writing about a chance meeting with Pierre Larouche before a game...

"We were on the second escalator on our way to ice level, when I heard a voice yell to me, “Hey kid, hey little Larouche.” At this point I was half way up the escalator, and I looked to an open door, and standing there in a suit, and on crutches, was none other than Pierre Larouche. I could not even believe it. I immediately jumped from half way up the escalator, down to the bottom and right over to him."

...great idea by Carp getting his readers involved with the blog.

Rangers Inquire About Sundin

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes says Mats Sundin is doing his best Brett Favre impersonation and the Rangers may be interested...

"The Vancouver Province reported that Sundin---the 38-year-old center who spurned the Rangers last December when they couldn't clear enough cap room and the Canucks came up with more dough---will be told by his agent J.P. Barry this week that four or five teams have inquired about a potential return, including the Canucks. A source told me that a Rangers executive (possibly Sundin's one-time agent Mike Barnett) at one point asked about his intentions as well."

...oh please no, not again with the Sundin rumors.

...i know it was just a question about Sundin's intentions, but I had hoped the days of contacting over-the-hill superstars was over.

Rangers Need to Shape Up

Andrew Gross at The Bergen Record reports on what the Ranger players should expect going into their first camp with John Tortorella as head coach...

"Training camp, which opens Sept. 12, will be hell, Tortorella has promised. At least two letters have been sent to the Rangers players warning them to report in the best possible shape.

And tip-top shape is necessary to play Tortorella’s up-tempo brand of hockey."

...the Rangers might not be the most talented team in the league this year, but they will be the most in-shape and hard working team, which sometimes is better.

Del Zotto Turning Heads

Ryan Pyette at the London Free Press has a nice piece on how Rangers defensive prospect Michael Del Zotto began turning heads after he was traded to the London Knights last season and now may have a chance to make the Canadian World Junior team...

"You know he's talented but until the trade, you didn't really know how good he was," Knights coah Dale Hunter said. "You'd only see him two times a year and it's hard to get an impression. But he came here and it wasn't just the offence.

"He hit hard. He did a great job for us and I think he can help a team (at the international level)."

...let's hope Del Zotto is too busy succeeding with the Rangers this year to worry about the Canadian World Junior team.

...with a wide open competition for the last few spots on D, Del Zotto has as good a chance as anyone to make the big club.

Callahan Wants to Continue Progressing

Jeff Z. Klein at Slap Shots was able to sit down with Ryan Callahan before he left the U.S. Olympic orientation camp...

Here's Callahan on what he expects from himself this year...

“Obviously I want to improve points-wise and continue on progressing, like I was last year at the end of the year — the last 15 or 20 games, when Torts took over, I was putting up quite good points. I’d like to continue with that in the first half of the season and try to get us in a good position in the standings.”

Callahan also talks about the US Olympic team playing a similar uptempo style as the Rangers, possibly being on a line with Marian Gaborik and John Tortorella.

...really looking for Callahan to have a break-out year in Tortorella's system. It suits him to a tee.

Who Wants to Blog for the Rangers Report?

Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report is asking his readers if anyone wants to guest blog while he's on vacation...

"So I’m asking the Boneheads. Are any of you interested in taking a day next week (or in subsequent weeks) to do a post? You can talk pretty much anything, as long as you keep it within an arm’s length of the Rangers.

I am not sure how I will choose if there are more than six or seven responses, so I’m up for your suggestions on that as well."

...this is a great opportunity for anyone looking to get into the journalism field to beef up their portfolio.

...h/t Rangers Tribune.

Speaking of Sanguinetti, Steve Zipay at Blue Notes says the young blueliner has a shot at making the club out of camp and that Upper Deck rates him highly enough to be one of 14 Top NHL Prospects to be including in an Ontario photo shoot next Wednesday in Ontario, along with John Tavares.

ESPN's Burnside Chats Rangers

Over at ESPN.com, Scott Burnside held a recent web chat with hockey fans which included numerous Ranger questions on subjects such as Callahan making Team USA, Marian Gaborik's health and the Brashear signing. Here's a snippet...

Lazar N. (Brooklyn, NY)
With all the new faces during the offseason, do you think the NY Rangers will be a better team this year?

Burnside (4:06 PM)
Every time I look at the Rangers' off-season I think of Glen Sather back in the pre-cap days when he'd scrounge up a pile of over-paid, underachieving free agents and then wonder why nothing ever happened. The good thing for the Rangers is that head coach John Tortorella will have the team from the start of the season. The bad news is there are more question marks now than a year ago and I don't think the Rangers are any closer to being a Cup contender.

...nice to see lots of Ranger fans participate in this chat. Unfortunately, every answer from Burnside regarding the Blueshirts was negative. C'mon Scotty stop being such a hater.

Sather Comes Full Circle With Zherdev Moves

Ryan Classic at Classic Blog does a great job breaking down what the Rangers are left with after the numerous moves Glen Sather made to bring Nikolai Zherdev to the Blueshirts then ultimately get him out...

"In 18 months the Rangers managed to give up Tyutin, Backman, Fristche, Reitz, and Zherdev, while also trading two 4th-round and one 7th-round picks. Besides one year of Zherdev, what do they have to show? Their own 2008 4th-round pick that they had to trade two more picks to get. That's right, the Rangers gave up five players and three picks for a net total of their own draft pick. To make matters worse, Backman and Tyutin were deemed expendable because Sather thought Redden was a great signing, and the Rangers now only have four NHL defencemen under contract, and two are Redden and Michal Roszival."

...this actually made me sick to my stomach when I read it. Paging Mark Messier. Mark Messier please pick-up the courtesy phone.

Rangers on NBC Flex Schedule

Steve Lepore at Puck the Media was able to get the NBC flex schedule for the up-coming season, which includes three possible Ranger games.

Mar. 14, 12:30 PM
Philadelphia vs. NY Rangers
OR
Pittsburgh vs. Tampa Bay
OR
Washington vs. Chicago

Rangers Looking for More Offense

In NHL.com's 20th installment of their 30 Teams in 30 Days feature they focus on the Rangers and their off-season dedicated to finding offense...

"It certainly will be an interesting mix for the Rangers in 2009-10. Of last season's top six scorers, only team captain Chris Drury, who was third with 56 points, currently is under contract. Leading scorer Nik Antropov left for Atlanta, Scott Gomez was dealt to Montreal, Markus Naslund retired and Nikolai Zherdev became an unrestricted free agent after the club lost his arbitration hearing and opted to walk away from the one-year, $3.9 million deal the player was awarded. Brandon Dubinsky is a restricted free agent, but likely will get a new contract.

To spark the up-tempo offense Tortorella favors, the Rangers spent big for free agent forward Marian Gaborik. The Slovakian right wing has been better than a point-per-game player each of the last four seasons, but he's played just 207 of a possible 328 games in that span."

...i think by adding Gaborik, Kotalik, Higgins and Prospal the Rangers have addressed their need for offense up-front. The issue now is trying to get something offensively from the backline.

In addition to the above feature, there is a story by Adam Kimelman on Tortorella changing the culture with the Rangers as well as a number of Ranger videos on the NHL.com homepage.

Anisimov a Calder Candidate

John Grigg at The Hockey News gives his Top 10 candidates to win the Calder Trophy as top rookie in the NHL this year and includes Artem Anisimov at #9...

9. Artem Anisimov, C, New York Rangers
Although little-known, expect Anisimov to have every chance at a big season on Broadway. The 21-year-old was the 54th pick of the 2006 draft and last season led New York’s American League affiliate, Hartford, in scoring with 37 goals and 81 points – good for fifth in the league. With Scott Gomez gone to Montreal, the Blueshirts need someone to fill the offensive void down the middle and Anisimov will be given every opportunity to be that player.

...hope the Rangers give Anisimov a chance to succeed. The worst thing they could do is panic if he struggles early and send him back down to Hartford or bring in another center.

...having said that, I'm with Grigg and expect a big year out of the kid.

Maybe Avery Was Better Off in Dallas

...always thought having "Ice Girls" was minor leagueish but not anymore.

Rangers to Appear on Versus Eight Times

The NHL announced it's national television schedule today which includes the Rangers on Versus eight times...

"Versus has exclusive rights in the United States to the time slot for 26 games this season, meaning there can be no other game being broadcast in the country at that time. The network will air 54 games in total.

Pittsburgh and Detroit will appear eight times on Versus, including their March 22 rematch of the last two Stanley Cup Finals. The New York Rangers, Chicago and Philadelphia will also appear eight times on the network."

For the entire Versus schedule click here.

The NHL also announced NBC will once again have its flex scheduling in place, meaning producers can wait until 13 days prior to the game to choose between at least two pre-selected games. Teams can appear on the network a maximum of four times.

...man, the Versus telecast is the worst. There have been a few rumors about ESPN being interested in televising the NHL again but unfortunately all have been shot down. So I guess we're stuck.

Boyle Looking For New Start

Mike Loftus at the Patriot Ledger has a nice piece on new Ranger Brian Boyle looking for a new start with the Blueshirts after a disappointing 2008-09 season with Los Angeles...

“I’ve got a lot to prove. This is definitely the most important year in my career to date. I want to get over the hump, be an everyday (NHL) guy. To be able to play well in New York is something a lot of people would want to do, so this is a great opportunity.”

...another player looking for a fresh start with the Rangers (see Kolalik and Prospal). Which I think is great for the players and the team. Nothing wrong with having a bunch of hungry players looking to prove people wrong.

Drury, Callahan Discuss Trying Out for US Olympic Team

Tortorella: We're Soft Mentally

Jeff Z. Klein at Slap Shot was able to sit down with John Tortorella after yesterday’s practice sessions at the U.S. Olympic team orientation camp...

On players needing to earn their time this year...

“It’s a process, it’s accountability, it’s merit,” he said, then outlined a program of eternal Darwinian struggle. “No one’s locked into any positions — people are going to earn their time, they’re always going to have to earn their time. Even if they get some, if they don’t keep on going they may get moved around a little bit. I think that makes it into more of a hard-type situation. This is a hard game. I just think we’re soft mentally, and I think we have to grow in that area.”

...i really love the level of accountability Tortorella brings to the team. Although Torts might have to work on his own accountability (See last year's playoff water bottle incident). I thought Renney did a good job of holding players accountable when he first came in but it trailed off at the end. I don't see that happening with Torts.

Tortorella also spoke about Prospal, training camp, the Messier hiring, Gaborik, and had this to say about Scott Gomez being traded...

"With us moving Scotty, I don’t think he played that well — I think Scott Gomez is honest about that too, I don’t think he thought he played that well — and we had an opportunity to get out of a contract there that was jamming us a little bit with the cap. I thought that Glen did a terrific job in taking care of that part of it. But I don’t begrudge Scotty anything as a hockey player, and he’s a good guy. Some of the onus belongs on our organization: we didn’t have a whole bunch of wingers that could help him."

...i also love his honesty. Sure Gomez didn't play well as a Ranger, but it did have a lot to do with not having a sniper on the wing. Pretty ironic that when the Rangers finally bring that sniper in (Gaborik) they move Gomez out.

Blogs: Future, Burke, Band, Yo-Yo, Drury and Rozsival

Jess Rubestein at The Prospect Park continues his look at the Rangers future by spotlighting two goaltending prospects.

The Dark Ranger wonders what the Rangers line-up could look like if Brian Burke were GM.

Scotty Hockey says John Tortorella continues to put the Tampa Band back together by getting Vinnie Prospal.

Over at Rangers Review, Inferno says the Rangers continue to play with his emotions this off-season.

Gootzman at The Corner of Section 420 and Glendale feels that its Chris Drury's team and time.

Ryan McFadden at The Manic Ranger plays GM and finds a way to trade Michal Rozsival.

Team USA Goes Retro & Rangers

Chris Drury, Ryan Callahan and the rest of Team USA unveiled its new look jerseys during Day 2 of Olympic Camp and Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy does a great job of braking them down...

"Gone is the wavy red-and-white "flag" on the "S" from the logo (because it had to go, per the IOC); in its place on the Nike-designed sweater is a logo that harkens back to Olympic hockey glory in Team USA's history: Including a third jersey that resembles the one worn during the team's gold medal run during the 1960 Games in Squaw Valley."

On the third jersey having a Ranger look Wyshynski says...

"They do have a bit of that "Miracle On Ice" no-frills vibe, and we appreciate the more prominent display of "USA" on the front; although we imagine the "third jersey" is giving Islanders and Devils fans the willies with its strong resemblance to the New York Rangers' gear."

...first the Avalanche, now Team USA. Can't anyone come up with an original jersey concept anymore.

...in all seriousness, I like to new duds.

Rangers Don't Get Bertuzzi

Despite a number of Todd Bertuzzi to Rangers rumors over the course of the summer, TSN is reporting that he has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Grand Rapids Press, The Detroit Free Press and MLive.com claim the Red Wings were offering a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

...i would have liked to have seen Bertuzzi's big body in a Rangers uniform, especially at that price, but you've got to assumed the Prospal signing signaled the end of a possible Rangers pursuit of Bertuzzi.

Messier Denies Being Interviewed By Oilers

In Sunday's New York Post article announcing the Rangers hiring of Mark Messier, Larry Brooks wrote that Messier was interviewed by the Edmonton Oilers for their head coach position this summer, which Messier is now denying...

Jim Matheson at the Faceoff.com has this quote from Messier...

"That's not necessarily true," said Messier. "I talked to Kevin about working in the Oilers organization in some regard . . . not just this summer but for the last few years. We never really talked about the coaching, per se. We explored every possibility."

"I have a lot of respect for (Oilers owner) Daryl Katz and Kevin, but with my family moving up to New York (from Hilton Head, S.C., and the Bahamas where he also has a hotel) . . . my son Douglas is going to start school (this fall) and we wanted him to go there, it seemed to make sense to be closer to home this year.

"I had an ongoing dialogue with Kevin about coming back to Edmonton, but wasn't able to make any sort of commitment to them."

...Larry Brooks wrong? C'mon.

The Colorado Rangers?

David Driscoll-Carignan at Mile High Hockey (via Puck Daddy) leaks possible Colorado Avalanche third jersey.

...this jersey looks similar to the jersey of a certain team from New York. C'mon get original.

Nylander Contacts Jagr About KHL

Over at the Examiner, Dmitry Chesnokov reports that former Ranger Michael Nylander has contacted Jaromir Jagr to inquire about playing for Omsk...

Here's Jagr on the conversation...

"Negotiations about player transfers is the business of club managers. But if my consultation is needed, how can I refuse? Actually, Nylander himself dialed my number. [He was] asking me about Omsk, about the team. I replied that Avangard is a strong team with a huge devoted army of fans. In the West KHL is not that well known. You have to explain to a lot of players that the Russian championship is serious."

...despite playing terrible hockey since leaving the Rangers, I've always felt that the Rangers made a mistake by not pushing harder to re-sign Nylander. He had such great chemistry with Jagr and neither player was the same after he left.

...i think the Rangers would have been much better off the last two years with Drury and Nylander rather than Drury and Gomez. And I guarantee you that Jagr would have been brought back last year if Nylander was still on board.

...h/t Puck Daddy.

Prospal: Big Chance to Prove People Wrong

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes was able to interview the newest Ranger Vinnie Prospal today.

On some of his countrymen succeeding in New York he said...

Marty Straka, Petr Nedved, Jaromir Jagr, Radek Dvorak..."had great runs with the Rangers, some of them had career years, basically. For me, this is a big chance to prove people wrong."

Prospal also talks about last season in Tampa, Tortorella's coaching style and having no preference on a position.

...sounds like Prospal's coming in as a player trying to redeem himself. Nothing wrong with that.

Rangers Officially Announce Prospal Signing

Newyorkrangers.com reports Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Vinny Prospal.

Here's a quote from Sather...

"Vinny is a highly-skilled player with good offensive instincts and the ability to play on the wing or at the center position,” stated Sather. “We think he will give us added flexibility and brings a veteran presence to our lineup.”

...this signing is getting a lot of praise in the media. I'm not 100% sold on Prospal, but I guess at the price I can't complain too much. Plus he's nice insurance if Dubinsky can't rediscover his rookie season magic or god forbid is traded.

The Rangers also officially announced the Mark Messier hire here.

Messier Hire Putting Heat on Tortorella?

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants takes an interesting look at the Mark Messier hiring...

"Here's another thought: Does Messier's hiring put any more pressure on John Tortorella to show results quickly? Messier has indicated he's more interested in a front office position than one in coaching. However, per Messier, Sather already asked him to coach the team once - before Sather had to take over for the fired Bryan Trottier while Messier was still a player - and Messier apparently was disappointed not to get a call from Sather about the job when Tom Renney was fired."

...i think Gross has a real legitimate point here. If the Rangers struggle out of the gate this season, you can be sure that the fans will be calling for Messier. If I'm Tortorella, I can't be too excited about this hiring. Hopefully, the Rangers will have a great season and this point will be moot.

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes takes a look at what the Vinnie Prospal signing does for the Rangers line-up.

Ranger Prospects Shine in Series Vs. Russia

According to newyorkrangers.com, in the final game of the American Under-20 team's four game series versus Russia, Derek Stepan had a goal and an assist, giving him 1 goal and 7 assists in the four games.

Other Ranger prospects starred as well, as Ryan Bourque ended the series with two goals and an assist and Chris Kreider improved throughout the series.

...dare I say the Rangers have a number of legit prospects. Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time till Sather drains that talent to bring in an over-priced, past-his-prime superstar. I kid Glen.

Rangers Could Be Interested In Oilers Defensemen

David Staples at the Edmonton Journal says the Oilers depth of puck-moving defensemen could draw a deal for a scoring forward and lists the Rangers as a possible trade partner...

New York Rangers
The top guy here, Michal Rozsival, got just 30 points. A player like Brandon Dubinsky is interesting, as is Ryan Callahan.

...man I hate that Dubinsky's name is mentioned in every trade rumor.

Rangers Hire Messier

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports Mark Messier is rejoining the Rangers' organization as special assistant to club president Glen Sather.

Messier said this about the opportunity...

"I couldn't be more thrilled with the opportunity to move back to New York with my family, to learn from Glen and to work for the Rangers," Messier said yesterday by phone from the Bahamas. "I'm going to come in and get my feet wet and get an overview of how the business runs and how the team runs and take it from there."

Brooks adds that coach Tom Renney approached Messier last season about the possibility of working with the coaching staff this season. It also has been learned that Messier interviewed this summer for the vacant coaching position in Edmonton that ultimately went to Pat Quinn.

...great job by the Rangers bringing The Captain back. While Brooks says the "move should not be interpreted as Sather hiring his successor," why else would he do it?

Rangers Sign Prospal; Dubinsky, Rangers Far From Agreement

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Rangers have signed Vinnie Prospal to a one-year, $1.1 million deal...

"The plan at the moment is to give Dubinsky the opportunity to claim the center position on the first line that will feature Marian Gaborik on the right and either Sean Avery or Christopher Higgins on the left. But if Dubinsky cannot handle the assignment, Prospal, who is strong on the puck, probably would get the call."

...similar to the Kotalik signing the Rangers are hoping for a rejuvenation out of Prospal. Would rather the Rangers give a younger guy a chance, but what was I expecting from Sather.

Brooks also reports it seems that Brandon Dubinsky and the Rangers are not going to reach an agreement on a multi-year contract and that unless Dubinsky can attract an offer sheet on which the Blueshirts would have the right of first refusal, it appears as if he will play the season on his one-year qualifying offer of $698,500.

...how can the Rangers justify throwing money at Kotalik and Prospal and not Dubinsky. Mind numbing.

Rangers Storyline Equals New Forwards

Sean McCaig at The Hockey News puts together team-by-team storylines for the upcoming season...

RANGERS
Two-thirds of the forwards will be new faces, including oft-injured Gaborik and oft-injuring Donald Brashear.

...with the major overhaul at the forward position, chemistry is going to be a big theme this pre-season.

FDNY & NYPD Support Higgins

Micheal Obernauer at the Daily News has a nice piece on Chris Higgins' father being a member of the FDNY and his brother a NYPD cop...

Here is a message on the website of his father's company...

"Congratulations," the message reads, "to the newest member of the NY Rangers - Chris Higgins, who happens to be the son of Captain Bobby Higgins E231!" And finally: "The men are hopeful in anticipation of a 'Stanley Cup visit to Brownsville' sometime in the near future!"

...being from Long Island I'm really looking forward to rooting for a hometown guy.

Stepan Continues to Shine

Newyorkrangers.com reports Rangers prospect Derek Stepan of the Team USA Under-20 squad picked up his fifth and sixth assists of the USA/Russia series during the third period of USA's 6-4 loss to Russia in game 3 of the four game series.

Rangers 2009 first round pick Chris Krieder was held scoreless, while third round pick Ryan Bourque was a healthy scratch after scoring two goals and an assist in the first two games.

For more go to NHL.com and Beyond the Blueshirts.

...nice to have a playmaker like this in the Rangers system.

Rumor: Rangers Show Interest in Richards, Prospal & Bertuzzi

William DePaoli at The Insider on Pittsburgh Sports says that the Rangers continue to show strong interest in Dallas' Brad Richards, but the sides are not close to a deal...

"The two sides have agreed on Brandon Dubinsky being involved but there's a major snag in the trade talks.

The Rangers are trying to move Michal Rozsival in any deal for Richards. The Stars have no interest in Rozsival."

...and I have no interest in Richards.

DePaoli adds that the Rangers have reached out to free agents Vinny Prospal and Todd Bertuzzi.

...i know nothing about this site (it could be the HockeyBuzz of Pittsburgh for all I know) so I wouldn't put too much stock into these rumors. Especially when a website with the title "The Insider on Pittsburgh Sports" is giving inside information on New York sports.

...h/t to The Manic Ranger on Twitter.

Drury Talks Youth Hockey Days

Rangers 17th in SI Power Rankings

In their first power rankings of the year, SI.com has the Rangers at #17...

17. New York Rangers (43-30-9)
The second-lowest scoring team in the East swapped the salary spent on Scott Gomez (Montreal) for a legit sniper in Marian Gaborik. If he stays healthy, no sure bet, he could be the summer's best UFA signing. They also ditched the frustratingly erratic Nikolai Zherdev and brought in feisty wingers Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik. Neither is without flaws, but both compete, making them better fits under coach John Tortorella.

...i'm going to have to agree with the ranking here. Especially when you look at the whole list and see that despite the #17 ranking, the Rangers are the 7th Eastern Conference team mentioned meaning SI has them in the playoffs.

...however, how can SI not even state that the Rangers have Hank in goal?

Rangers Still Linked to Bouillon

Richard Labbe at Cyberpresse reports that three teams are still in the running for D Francis Bouillon including the Rangers...

"Depending on what the Press has learned Thursday, the New York Rangers, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks have all shown an interest in the defender of 33 years."

There was a rumor earlier this week that the Rangers had signed Bouillon but was unfounded.

...if he comes cheap I would love the defensive depth going into a wide open competition for the sixth and seventh defensive spot.

Rangers Ranked 113th Most Valuable Sports Property

SportsPro magazine has published the world’s first ranking of sports properties and puts the Rangers at #113...

113. New York Rangers Cablevision Systems Ice Hockey US - $291 million

The NFL is ranked as the world’s most valuable sports property, with a value of US$4.5 billion. The NHL is ranked 33rd ($760 million).

For the New York fans the Yankees are 12th ($1.19 billion), Giants 19th ($932 million), Jets 20th ($927 million), Mets 49th ($665 million), Knicks 80th ($405 million), and Islanders (NR).

...it's amazing that the Yankees, Giants and Jets are all more valuable than the entire NHL.

Fischler: Vailquette to Get More Starts, Youngsters Will Get a Chance

Over at MSG.com Stan Fischler answers some fan questions, including this one...

Ken M.: Stan, do you see Steve Valiquette playing more games this year or do you feel King Henrik will again get the brunt of the playing time? Does Torts have an idea on how many games he would like to see Henrik play and still be strong come playoff time? Thanks Stan!

The Maven Responds: Dear Ken M. – Based on my recent interview with John Tortorella, the coach wants to lessen Henrik Lundqvist's workload SOMEWHAT. How much will be determined by Henny's performance and the state of the team. I do expect Valiquette to get more games – but ONLY if he pleases the coach with wins.

Fischler also responds to questions about youngsters getting a chance to make the team by saying John Tortorella told him that he plans to give all the youngsters a good chance to make the big club on merit.

...Valiquette absolutely needs to get more games this year as Lundqvist seems to break down at some point every year. And with the Olympics this year it is even more necessary.

More Virtual Subway Signs on the Menu

Remember at the end of last season when virtual Subway ads where placed on the end board glass (see here) during Ranger games, well Michael McCarthy at USA Today tells us they'll be back...

"The NHL has discussed how to use virtual ads during the upcoming season with its national TV partners in the USA and Canada. At least four NHL clubs are working with their regional sports networks to sell virtual ads next season — the Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and New York Rangers."

McCarthy adds that the Rangers and MSG Networks only got a "handful of complaints" after placing the virtual ads during several game telecasts last season.

...i guess nothing is sacred anymore in Bettman's NHL. Plus the Dolans know they're getting this extra revenue and still jack-up ticket prices this year. Disgusting.

Ranger Prospects Continue to Shine for Team USA

USAHockey.com reports that Rangers prospects led the way as Team USA captured a 6-1 victory over Russia in the teams’ second matchup at the 2009 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.

Derek Stepan had three assists and Ryan Bourque had a goal and an assist. I erroneously reported earlier today that this year's first round pick Chris Kreider was a healthy scratch in the first matchup, but he was in fact in the line-up. Kreider has been held scoreless in the first two games.

Team USA was also victorious in the first game 8-1. Bourque now has two goals and an assist and Stepan has four assists in the two games.

NHL.com has more on the victory here.

...loving what I'm reading about our prospects at this evaluation camp.

Jagr, Brendl Need to Come Back to NHL

John Grigg at The Hockey News lists 10 KHL players he’d most like to see in the NHL, whether that means a return or a maiden voyage across the professional pond including former Ranger top prospect Pavel Brendl and Jaromir Jagr...

10. Pavel Brendl, RW, Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo - Brendl is one of the biggest busts in NHL draft history. The fourth-overall pick in 1999 by the Rangers set the Western League on fire during his draft season with 73 goals and 134 points, tops in both categories. He flamed out with 22 points in 78 NHL games with Philadelphia, Carolina and Phoenix, but is still just 28 and has averaged 33 goals the past three seasons in notoriously low-scoring Russia. In 2008-09 his 18 power play markers led the KHL.

9. Jaromir Jagr, RW, Avangard Omsk - Jagr was rumored to be on his way back to the NHL via the Edmonton Oilers last season, but that never materialized. Although definitely well past his prime, Jagr is still tantalizingly talented and, if willing to give 100 percent, would be a boon to any team. A good Olympic performance in February could portend an NHL return sometime this season for the 37-year-old Czech.

...Brendl epitomized the Rangers terrible drafting during the late 90s and early 2000.

Ryan Callahan talks new contract, new teammates, and a U.S. Olympic tryout...

Dubinsky for Richards Not Likely

Mike Heinka at the Dallas Morning News answers a question from a Rangers fan about the recent trade rumors that would send Brad Richards and another player to the Rangers for Brandon Dubinsky, Michal Rozsival and a prospect...

"But the Stars, I believe, have simply asked: Are we better with Rozsival on defense and Dubinsky as the No. 2 center or are we better with Brad Richards as our No. 2 center and the current defense? They have decided, I believe, they would be better with Richards as the No. 2 center and the current defense."

...can we please end all these rumors and friggin' sign Dubinsky already please.

Rangers Ranked 12th in NHL in Yahoo! Sports Power Rankings

In Ross McKeon's NHL Power Rankings for Yahoo! Sports he has the Rangers ranked 12th...

12. New York Rangers – Rumor has it Chris Chelios wants to play on Broadway. OK, he probably doesn’t have a lot left, but he is a coach on the ice and mentor in the dressing room a la Jeremy Roenick the last two years in San Jose.

...in the guy's first power rankings of the season he decides to justify the Rangers 12th spot by talking about a Chris Chelios rumor? I have no words.

Drury: I'm Excited

That's what Captain Chris Drury told Stan Fischler of MSG.com in a recent interview on the upcoming season...

On why he's excited...

"This is our first training camp under John Tortorella. So even though we had him as coach for a short period last season, this really is like a fresh start for every guy on the hockey club. When I think back to the change (from Tom Renney to Tortorella), it seems as if it happened so fast and with so few games to go in the regular season.

Let's face it, coming in the way Torts did had to be hectic for him, and I know that there were times when the guys on the club simply were overwhelmed by his new system. Now we're going to have so much more time to learn so much more from the coach."

Drury also answers questions about Donald Brashear, being a Captain and Marian Gaborik among many other topics.

...great insight into what our Captain is thinking going into the season.
